I know you can swap high cogs but is it possible to get a set of lower low range gears for the lt 95.?
Any aftermarket crawler gears etc?

I recall phoning Mal Story ( Maxi Drive owner) when I had a stage 1 about 12 years ago & asking that question & he said "you already have them"
I can't find the catalogue now- sorry.

The drive line on a 101 shows you how to do it.
You cannot get lower low range gears and the answer is you all ready have them.
A 101 landrover has something like 76 to 1 low low on 35/36 tyres using early range rover transmission.
the 101 diff ratios are 5.56 to one and that gives you the effect of crawler type transfer case.
There are plenty of options to gear up high range, like overdrives and higher ratio high range gears.

Thanks Ron & Deejay. Its in a perentie 6x6 built into a camper. The auto box is a bit high in first though top good for cruising. Low range runs out of grunt in sand. 4.7 diffs and I dont want to change them and lose my top end. Looks like i,ll have to live with it.
Cheers.

Which Auto do you have??? There LT95 is a 1-piece box and t-case - there are a few rangie auto conversions I am aware of, but none that would stand up to a 4BD1T...
you have 4.7:1 diffs and 3.32:1 t-case - what is the first gear of your auto?

Its a long story, I built it about 12 yrs ago . It had no donk so I put a 6.5 chev diesel with a turbo 700 auto with the lt 95 trb transfer in it. The 700 ratios were good but the box let me down , so put in a 4L80E manualised. They told me the high was lower and the low higher but I hadnt realised how much difference it would make. I dont know the ratios off hand but I probably would have been better off with a 4BD1t and a remote change Isuzu box with the Lt95 transfer behind.

123rover50, how did you manage to lay your hands on a perentie, or is it the one that was damaged and sold off as mentioned around here somewhere?
Have you posted any pics of it I can have a look at, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be very interested in this vehicle. I have a civvy 6x6 and would like to see the differences beyond the obvious.
As for the gearing issue, I have seen this done but don't recommend it unless its done well.
The LT95 transfer box, has equal spacing between input / intermediate / output shafts (115mm), so all gear sets in there will work in any position. The unit in question had the normal constant mesh set replaced with another set of low range gears, machined to fit onto the existing hub and shaft with adaptors and a lot of cap screws, pins and locktite. The centre diff housing had been machined slightly to clear the larger gear.
I calculated the ratios as: High 1.1128 (0.9962 gears) and Low 3.8518, giving a 16% reduction in low range.
Given the cost of getting it all machined its probably not worth it, I'd say this one was done as an experiment, but it was really well done.
Given the LT95 transfer box has 230mm spacing, same as LT230, means it may be possible to use these gears as well, opens up a real "can of worms"
If I still have the gears and I can find them in my shed  I'll post up some pics.

The 4L80E should have 2.48:1. Which gives you ~38:1. I would have thought that would be just sufficient, but I suppose you have a VERY heavy beast!
I think your easiest options would be:
(1) tweak the engine to compensate (or fit a 4BD1T :p )
(2) fit a front salisbury, and swap to 4.88:1 / 5.13 / 5.38 / 5.86 ratios.

Thanks Isuzurover and Sparkie.
I bought the chassis and axles and cab off a bloke in Sydney who bought them new at a JRA auction and didnt finish his project.
The axles I have posted on here before trying to determine what they are.
The forum decided they are Borg Warner diffs and we are not sure on the difflocks as they have the same actuator as the centre diff.
I tried to put a photo of the truck on ,but as it is already on under "The grey box of evil." it would not upload again.
Its a Forward Control and weighs around 4 tonnes, we get about 4 to 4.5 K,s per litre.

When you try to upload pics that are already on the forum, it will tell you what threads the pics are in.
So open the thread in another tab, find the pic and copy its location (url) to the clipboard, then go to your message and click on the picture icon, then paste the url into the address box that pops up.

i thought the term "perentie" only referred to the "wide body 6x6" not the normal army 6x6???
and normal 6x6's where sold to the civilan market as well.

IIRC 'Perentie' referred to the entire programme, 4x4's and 6x6's.

Two seriously nice looking rigs.:D
I have been considering putting a 2DR rangie cab on my 6x6 chassis but after seeing yours I might reconsider, how did you go getting it through rego etc. Is the chev diesel N/A or turbo?

Its only a 6.2 NA. Being a self funded retiree {possibly too early} the drip feed is not up to much and could not afford the extra for the 6.5.
Machinery was fairly easy. The bloke came here and had a look at what I was doing when the donk was in but no body. Then came back when it was finished for a road test. More concerned about brakes. He had this computer and inertia device in the cab, with a pressure pad on the brake pedal and we spent about 2 hours driving up and down the road locking up the back wheels. one moment I was pushing too hard the next not hard enough. He checked all the lights for ADR and then said that two wipers were not enough for the big screen. I said that is what they came with but had to change to three. A week later he rang back and said two was OK he was wrong, but by then I had lengthened the cable and put 3 blades on.
I still has drums on the rear I put a VH44 booster on each axle and a VH40 on the disc front.

If you are interested . In the"" introductions"" Forum is the story and pics of when I found the 110FC in Bougainville in 1973 or so. then in the Forward Control forum is the rest of the story of the mods and some pics. I think you have to put my user name in the search and it should come up.
Cheers .Didiman.

IIRC 'Perentie' referred to the entire programme, 4x4's and 6x6's.The term Perentie came from the Australian Army trials to select the vehicle for the next vehicle contract. Named "Project Perentie" which includes all the 110 and 6X6 variants, including the Toyota Land Cruiser and Jeep. Strictly speaking only the vehicles that took part in the trials should be called Perentie and the production ones Rover 110s and Rover 6X6.

'Whatever'
This is all very interesting, but definitely academic and somewhat off topic.
Back to a lowly geared LT95 please.
