MS Outlook frustration.

Having reinstalled outlook on my computer I was looking for a way of having it so I can have emails on both my desktop and laptop computer.

I followed the apparent instructions of the evil Mr Microsoft and set it so that it didn’t erase the emails from the server when downloaded.

This should mean even if I have downloaded on the desktop I can then download them onto the laptop email as well.

BUT what’s happening is that when I send/receive email on outlook on my desktop I am getting TWO of each email sent through.

Funny, I ticked "leave on server for 24 hours" and it works well for me.

BUT I have Outlook on a XP laptop and use Thunderbird on a Vista laptop.

Well the only answer is bin outlook and use thunderbird, well untill they get the all new intractive desktop messageing system up and running.
No serious head on, make sure to save your mails.
Then.
1. Delete your outlook mail profile.
2. Recreate it useing outlooks defaults.
3. Test it works ok.
4. Make sure it is not running in caching or off line mode.
5. Set the server setting to save a copy on the server, give it long enough so you can download to your second PC.
6. Do the same on the second PC.

Will that depend on me downloading to both computers regularly ?
The laptop rarely gets used at the moment.

Depending on how many emails you get unless you delete after a short time you are likely to fill your mailbox and no messages will get through.

On the PC you use most of the time (eg the desktop) untick the "leave a copy of messages on the server" and on the laptop tick the same box.

This will keep a copy of all of your emails on your desktop but you will be able to access on the laptop any that you haven't already read on the desktop. Any emails you send from the laptop (or the desktop for that matter) just bcc a copy to yourself and you will always have a copy of all emails sent...also a good way of knowing if your email went through.
You won't be able to access any emails on the laptop that you have previously opened on the desktop(and therefore downloaded from the server ) but every now and then copy the .pst file from C:\Documents and Settings\"username"\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook on your desktop to the same place on your laptop and you will have a copy (single copy!) of all of your emails on both computers.

This way your main computer has a single copy of every email you have ever received or sent but you can still browse and send emails from numerous other computers with various versions of outlook.

I think for that you need a product like mobileme (http://www.apple.com/mobileme/). It will sync all your email, contacts, calendars and much more across all devices you own. That's the Apple one but I'm sure there are others. They usually go on sale occasionally and it's $50 a year which I can live with.

Note that mobile me works with PC's too.

If you use you ISPs email bla@bigpond.com or so just setup a gmail address and use IMAP. Gmail gives you 8GB storage that should last a while. That way all your emails will be identical on all machines and webmail you get rid of your ISPs email so if you ever change you don't have to worry about telling everyone your new email. And use thunderbird for IMAP :D Outlook is sh**.

Yep. That would be my suggestion too.

Or go one step further and register your own domain name "vladtepes.com.au" then you can be indepenedent of an ISP email address.
