Hi all,

The other day when I was driving my 99 disco TD5 manual up a range something very strange happened to the clutch. About 3/4 of the way up I clutched to change down a gear and when I pushed the clutch in not a whole lot happened, and due to habbit I still pulled the gear out and went to go for 3rd but it wouldnt go in, so i quickly tried to pump the clutch and got a little bit out of it so i was able to get it into 3rd, but i really had to push. I left it in this gear until the top of the range and when i got to the top i stopped and pumped the clutch a few times and now it seems to work fine.

I havn't had any troubles since (this was last week) and i have been up on the beach all weekend and it didn't have any troubles there. It is a bit harder than it used to be to get it into gear and the top 1/4 or so feels alot softer than it used to be also but that is all. When I have the car stopped and i put the clutch in and put it in gear the car doesnt want to start moving at all so i'm pretty sure its disengaging fine, but otherwise have no idea what is going on.

Also I have recently put on a set of 285/75r16's which i know have been putting alot of stress on the clutch when starting in first.

Any ideas about what's going on??

Cheers and thanks in advance,
Shamo

Hi Shamo

I'm no mechanic, but the only issues I've had with clutches in the past have to do with the master cylinder. Could just need replacing.

How many kms has it done? Much heavy towing? I've got 80000 on mine, does some pretty serious towing and touch wood, no issues with the clutch.

Hope I've helped in some way.

Cheers

I'd check the slave cylinder first, if you bleed the clutch and it comes good, then it will be either the slave cylinder letting air in or a leaking master cylinder.

If it's the master cylinder it will have a leak somewhere, I've just been through this myself, my problem was the master cylinder, it had a small leak.

Thanks for that guy's i'll have a look at them this weekend then and see how it goes, also the car has 211,000 on it and I havn't done any towing with it since i've owned it but i have only had it 7 months and done 13,000 in that time.

My D2 has 235,000ks and is the first master cylinder I've replaced, the first slave cylinder went at 195,000ks, I replaced the slave as well this time even though I didn't need too, I have the old slave cylinder as a spare.
