I have recently aquired a 1997 4.6HSE which has the dreaded slipped liner. The vehicle is in good condition in all other respects and is also converted to LPG. I am looking at getting the block resleved and have found one such company which has done rover v8s in Perth, they have quoted about $1600 to reline the block with standard liners. Does anyone have any ideas on what relining should cost or any suggestions of anyone in Perth who can also reline the rover v8s?

Your price sounds OK ... and I do know of some "good ol boys" in Tate street Bentley
You need to also get your block crack tested ...

You have to make sure they fix/weld the crack that causes the liner to slip.
In most cases a crack in the block casting behind the liner is to blame.

Thanks to all for the info.
The people we were talking to say they haven't had a liner come loose after the re-sleeving (by the way they are in Tate St). I would still prefer to use Top hat liners though after reading through the info provided. The company did say they can do the top hat liners but the liners have to be ordered from the UK.

The 4.6 short motor listed from SA does look tempting though, but understandably its a fair amount more than I payed for the car :lol2:

Top hat liners are a must to prevent the problem re-occurring. Otherwise if (when) the block cracks again there will be nothing to prevent coolant escaping into the combustion chamber. Better still is the Turner Engineering solution that uses a nifty little seal at the base of the liner effectively turning it into a wet liner situation. It can crack all it likes but the coolant cannot go anywhere up or down.

Last time I enquired here in Adelaide, Comp Engines said they charged around $12-1500 to do the job depending on liners availability (off shelf or custom) and for machine work only - they do not do engine reassembly. Lonsdale Workshops have also done quite a few - they use special sealing compund around base of liner and claim they have never had a problem with coolant going downwards - it gets sucked up by vacuum. They charge $1200 for machining work to fit top hat liners and had them in stock.

You could PM Jezzol on the forums here, he has just been wrecking a 4.6L 1996 and the last time I raided his collection he still had the motor available. (he is in WA and one of the TeamRovercraft members.)

If you know what you are doing it may be worth a rebuild with the best bits of both cars. (I swapped a 4.6L for a 4.0L and did a similar thing) I would imagine it would be a bit cheaper than other options, though you run the risk of the problem reoccurring.... Either way I would be swapping out for a new radiator, water pump and thermostat which ever direction you go..

SORRY I HAVE JUST HEARD FROM JEZZOL THAT HE HAS SOLD THE MOTOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO...
