View Full Version : Diesel Smoke and the D4

Has anyone else noticed how much diesel smoke their 3.0L D4 pumps out?
I have followed mine a few times and when the little lady sinks the slipper in, it gives out a fairly solid puff of black smoke.
I have also noticed the diesel smoke at night when I am driving. You can see the cloud in the head lights of the following car.

Black smoke = overfuelling

My D3 would do it on occasion under heavy acceleration.

If you think it;s too much, take it to the dealer as it will probably just need a software reload/tweak/upgrade to make sure the throttle mapping's correct

It is booked in for the updates. I will ask them about it then.

Hi Mowog, funny you should mention this, I only noticed 2 days ago for the first time. I was coming onto a freeway with a bit of an incline and 'sunk the slipper' and noticed the smoke.
Its the first time I have noticed.
I was following a Rangie Sport TD yesterday and noticed that whenever the driver accelerated out of a round a bout, it left go with a puff of black smoke.
Sounds like it is pretty normal ????????????

Completely off topic but it is fun also when you are in traffic, being tail gated by little Jap 4cyl cars with windows down and hats on backwards.
I know I have quite enjoyed watching large amounts of diesel fumes fill their cars as I repeatedly accelerate needlessly in front of them
They seem to fall back and or change lanes shortly thereafter.

If you put the boot in it you get smoke... I think its pretty normal. Did the same on my FL2, and i see it all the time on the road when people overtake etc.
Just have LR check it out, just incase ;)

Have noticed it a lot as well, following D4's or RRS,around town.
Its still nowhere near the amount i have seen constantly being emitted out of LC200's

I had this happen with my X5 all the time.
2000k on the SE 3.0L . Not as noticeable yet.
Perhaps it varies with the quality of the fuel as well?

The D4 has another very handy anti tailgating feature. The downside it only works at night. The rear fog lights are at eye level for most sedans and they are very bright. A few moments of bright red lights seems to make even the most hardened tailgater back off.

Works on the D3 all the time....... is great to see the puzzled look on their faces as they assume you have applied the brakes, but you don't slow down.......

This is something I have added to the brain bank for when some tool tailgates me next.

A mate who has a D3 petrol wanted to have a drive of my 3.0 D4 today so I followed him driving his F250 7.3Lt TD (with chip, exhaust etc). I did notice that when he gunned it from a round-about there was a puff of smoke but no where near as much as I expected.
FYI: The F250 was a slug in comparison and all over the road. I know its an F-Truck. I have had 3 of them before.
Makes you appreciate the Disco

A F Truck is a slug? Really they have a engine the size of my wifes fiesta..... Strange i also thought they would pull like a train.

The F250 7.3 litre diesel is a pretty old design, designed to run on very dirty US diesel fuel (the US relatively went from having the dirtiest diesel of developed countries to the same high-spec diesel we have here). It is low-revving and low-stress, so it can't be expected to accelerate like the modern 3.0 Tdi D4. I just returned from a trip to the US and suspect that the 7.3 diesel uses a lot of the diesel energy to make rattle noises, and less energy for motive force:p

The F250 probably has good pulling torque but makes alot of noise and you have to use the pedal to get it moving.
I'll stick with my D4

Thanks for all the comments on this. Have done 4500 km now and have noticed this at night on acceleration from zero or low speed and was wondering if it was just mine.

Speaking of fuel..what is the sticker on the inside of the fuel cap suggesting oil every 1000 km? Can't see anything in the manual about it despite the i symbol.

Actually got a puncture today (around town).
Got out exhaust jack, and then had second thoughts about blocking up the second tailpipe... used the air compressor instead (nearly as quick anyway). Just pulled out the screw which caused the problem, plugged the hole and pumped the tyre back up.
Now I have been driving diesels for over 30 years, but I was still amazed at the amount of carbon junk around the tailpipes, surprised thou that there was virtually none on the bodywork, at least someone in LR got something right :)

I've got 3lt with DPF (try to save the planet), no smoke ,inside of exhaust pipes clean just lost the shine inside now after 9000 km, 4000 of them towing 2 ton.

It means after the "First 1000k's" check the oil as this is when it will use a lot of oil on its initial run in.

Cheers.

Hello all,
I recently purchased a D3TDV6 (very low Km's) it also does the puff of smoke thing.....very noticeable at night but also during the day. My wife's Ford Focus TDi does the same thing when you rip into it, and boy does she rip. The old bus (TD5) didn't do this however. Maybe it's normal?

I also have a Mini Cooper Diesel and it emits zero smoke. After 7000klm the exhaust tip is even soot free.

Hi Mate,
This is the response i tried to send to your email but kept bouncing, so i cut & paste to here.

The dealer that you take the vehicle too will do a diagnostic check over, just raise the issue with them upon book in.
I will assume the vehicle has only 4-5000km's on it, so it may still be learning the drive sequence if you & your wife swap? driver & yes they do puff a fair bit of smoke including mine(2.7 tho'). We have noticed that they do steady up a little especially after 1st service, but will always blow a puff upon acceleration.
See how you go after they look at it.

Cheers.

I thought I might follow up in this thread.
The D4 started blowing smoke and using a little oil about a year ago. It went for a dealer visit and the problem seemed to have been fixed.
Fast forward 12 months.. The D4 burned 1 liter in 9000klm but I haven't noticed any smoke at all. The dealer investigation has found an oil leak in the secondary turbo. I am now waiting for parts for the fix.

Hi Mowog,
can you see where the oil has leaked to, (i.e running or pooling somewhere) reason I ask is mine has oil dripping off starter motor, and after a week and a half in dealers , they have decided, coming from front and running back, now waiting for LR UK to tell them how to fix it.
  Cheers Ken

It is an internal turbo leak. So its going out the exhaust

And not blowing smoke, that's strange,
You must keep your eyes on the road ahead, like a good boy. LOL
