(03 TD5 Auto Disco)

I have noticed lately my TD5 has been blowing more smoke than usual. On startup it runs like its on 3 or 4 cylinders and blows blue smoke. I have also check the dip stick and noticed after about every 2000kms, the level has gone down from the full marker to the next marker. On the weekend I installed an EGR removal kit and noticed lots of oil in the hose from the intercooler into the EGR and the inlet maifold had heaps of oil in it. The car has done 205,000 kms so far. I had an issue with the car that when you first started it and was cold it would surge from about 2500rpms to 3000. When the car was warm I could stop it and restrt it and this would go away. This went on for a while(Stupid me should have done something early to fix it). I noticed my intercoller hose that goes to the turbo end was loose. After tightening this that symton went away. Just wondering now if I have stuffed somthing up by driving the car around for a while like this. ( Did it suck crap through the turbo?) Any thoughts.... I'm not a mechanic but have some idea about how a engine works so forgive me if I am sounding a bit dumb here.

Couple of obvious checks...

1 - If the turbo hoses are original, then they're buggered...
Get yourself some silicone ones!

2 - Check for oil in harness, unplug your ECU and check for oil in the plug.
Your injector loom is likely to be full of oil (easy and cheap to repair)

I checked the ECU and its clean. Yeah the hoses probably need changing. Would oil in the injector loom make it consume oil?

A friend of mine had a quick look this morning. He loosened off the oil filler cap and then started the car and whitish gas coming out pushing the cap around. When I removed the cap fully it looked like steam coming from the filler. From his previous experiences, he seems to think its the head gasket thats gone.

It could be expensive, but certainly needs urgent attention, or it WILL be expensive. The head gasket failure is a likely explanation, but it could also be a cracked or warped cylinder head or possibly even more expensive problems.

check the engine breather pipe, if thats relatively clean then check the turbo output pipe (exhaust and air) for oil you could have a shot turbo seal if its on the air side of the turbo that can get very pricey very quickly.

oil in the harness doesnt cause oil consumption (the amount that it acutally leaks is nearly insignificant)

Dumb question (Sorry), is the engine breather pipe the one that come from the rocket cover and is the turbo output pipe the one that goes out to the intercooler?

not a dumb question but yes.

the engine breather is the one that goes from the rocker cover plate to the passangers side of the engine and hooks onto the hose from the air filter box.

the turbo air output hose is the one that runs from the turbo forwards into the intercooler.

it may also pay to cover the hose when you take it off of the rocker cover and start it up to see what and how much is coming out of the breather port.

Blknight.aus, thanks but got home late last night and had organised to take it somewhere in the moring....

OK.. I took into a Landrover Mechanic this morning and he has told me that cylinder 1 is down and the other 4 are compansating for it. He seems to think the engine needs an overhaul. He did mention that it maybe the head gasket but will not know until he strips it down. Does anyone know if this is a common issue with TD5's where if a head gasket has gone, it normaly shows signs of cylinder 1 being down? A quote of about 6k-7k for a changeover motor is a bit rich for me.
