For the last 6 years I have owned a very reliable and capable D1 (you can see it in my avatar). As the family has changed since I bought it, and the kids didn't enjoy the hard stuff this car was built for, we decided to change over and get ourselves a TDV6 HSE D3 (Tod). Now Tod is a lovely boy, has plenty of personality although he is a bit of a wuss cause he squeals in fright when we are stopped in traffic and a car goes past us (front sensors). He also has a flactulance problem which the boys find quite amusing (a lever on the climate contol system moving).
To help fund the purchase I sold my Jetta and my D1. It's only been about 4 weeks since the bush truck has gone but geez we miss her. I keep finding myself saying if we had the bush truck we could of.... :(

Just for another point of view, what don't you miss?
I had a dream that I'd crashed my D1 last night. Rear ended someone. Probably too busy looking at my new (cheap) gps. I was getting quotes for repair when I woke up so I don't know how it worked out... but I'd hate to be without it.

what dont I miss... hmmm
lack of cago space
body roll and general handling on road
lack of comfort compared to the D3
coppers looking sideways at me everytime I drive by (but despite the illegal mods the only comment I ever got was to put some front mud flaps on it)
being so modified, worries about what would happen if I did stack into someone
yep I still miss not being able to drive over or through anything at anytime.

Have you actually tried just pointing the D3 at things and seeing if it will go up and over? You might be surprised :). Tyres are usually the most limiting factor, not the vehicle.

I admit that I haven't tested the D3 and know they are very capable, but I doubt it would follow the D1 with F&R lockers, snorkel 33inch plus mud tyres and a winch to pull it out when things go wrong

Yep! It was one nice Disco. Tony came out on the D4 day at Lithgow with us, and I got a chance to look it over ...
... I doubt the D3 could match it offroad in serious terrain ... can you say ground clearance!! It was one well setup Disco.
The tractor tyres obviously helped a bit too :) .... which you won't be fitting to a D3 anytime soon.
Kev..
