D2 TD5 auto Ignition lock

Hi,

Noticed since I've had the car - 12 months ish it's difficult inserting the key into the ignition lock. I have 2 keys, both same problem. You must line it up perfectly or it just won't go in.

Is this common in D2's or can I expect to replace the lock soon?

Did think of graphite spray down the lock but not sure if you should do that with these 'smart' locks.

Also sometimes - infrequently - when you get the key in just won't turn. Take it out, think of a number between 1 and 10, wait that long, put it back and all's ok - usually.

Sounds like the lock might be on its way out mate - it's a commonly reported issue on the D2. I have read that some use graphite as a "short term" fix, but will require replacement of the internals eventually.

Yep sounds like you have the "sticky Wafer" problem. Not much you can do but get them "smoothed" by locksmith before they fail completely and the lock fails to turn at all.

if it does happen striking the lock/key insert slot gently with a rubber/plastic mallet sometimes shocks the wafers to fall into line and gets you going.

The lubricant reccomended by the locksmith after my roadside $300 assist was INOX a non sticky non drying silicone based stuff, service the lock regularly with this stuff was the reccomendation.

GET IT DONE - THEY WILL FAIL ON YOU and then you're really stuck

its all to do with the small ballbearing that the key has to push in/past.
This causes the key to go up and wear the diecast lock surround and wafers. nothing you can do about it, the ballbearing deactivates some security requirement,, aparently,,
