VIC car transfer to NSW

G'day Guys,

I'm looking at transferring a VIC car to NSW - car has full VIC rego, can the car be sold without the rego? I guess the VIC rego is worth about $1,000?

Where is the best place to get the REVs check etc?

I recently bought a caravan with VIC rego and to transfer:

The current vic owner should cancel the rego on the care (as per VIC Roads, luck for us the van owner did not do this)

Get a permit to drive the car home

Take car and get a NSW blue slip

take blue slip to RTA and finish off the form that the Blue slip dealer will give you with the recipt that the seller of the car gave you with VIN number on it and the sellers full address and pay a lot of money to the RTA,

I noticed that the van had 12 months rego for a grand total of $34.

Vehicle can be driven from Vic to NSW on a permit, I have done this 2 years ago. Depending on the mood of the RTA Nazis you will need plenty of documentation and a signed reciept for the vehicle as well as old rego number. I bought a low K BA Falcon that had been through the auctions from a Vic dealer and drove back unreg. Went to get a Blue slip, no problem but the RTA would not accept the reciept from the car yard as it was not signed. No previous rego or plates to hand in also complicated matters. I eventually drove on the still current permit to another RTA office who registered it without question.
It seems cars less than 5 years old are more stringently checked due to rebirthing.

if you want to drive it home......just leave it registered and drive it......all you need is to organise insurance.......
then when you get to nsw......you can cash in the remainder of the rego.....

you will need to blue slip it before you can get it registered in nsw.....
they will check engine and chassis numbers for this.....

RTA will make you jump through hoops about the reciept if it is not from the last registered driver if it is should be no problems do a deal with the seller to leave the rego on the car till you drive it back to sydney only need a couple of days the blue slip and vist the RTA with wads of cash:D

Vic registration varies depending on location but if within the metro area is $612. The vehicle can be sold without the registration but the owner is required to take the plates and hand them in to Vic Roads to get the refund. Technically the vehicle should not be sold with registration without a roadworthy certificate and transfer of ownership.

This should work alright, but any sensible vendor will need something in writing to confirm the date and time you take delivery of the car, in case of subsequent speeding fines or other infringements before the new rego is established.

It would be wise to check with Vicroads to establish what authentication they require to indemnify the vendor from infringements.

Just remember Vic permits are not valid in NSW

Get a trailer and trailer it home it will work out cheaper

Permits are now valid interstate for the one trip. I only recently became aware of this. Having to get a permit at the first registry or police station across a border was a PIA. Wallangarra Qld. police would only issue them in office hours, monday to Friday. I was told this on a Saturday morning and also told not to drive that unregistered car over the weekend.

The easiest way to do the transfer is if the car has an RWC from a Vic. inspector. Transfer the Vic. reg. to your name at an address of convenience. Then in NSW cancel the Vic. reg. and re-register in NSW. You will get a refund of the unexpired portion of the Vic. reg. and not have to pay stamp duty again in NSW as the car has been registered in the same name in another jurisdiction. you also will have two weeks in NSW to do all the necessary.

To transfer reg cost a couple of hundred dollars no matter what state your in so why would you pay it twice
