I fitted a Bearmach front diff guard... you be the judge
http://paulp38a.com/gallery/d/4098-1/IMG_2223.JPG

Clearance has been reduced by approx 20mm.
http://paulp38a.com/gallery/d/4096-1/IMG_2222.JPG

It is simply attached to the existing diff pan bolts. You can see that the nuts don't complety locate on the threads. I wouldn't trust them to hold on impact.

I think it needs a support bracket up the front and over the diff - like the QT rear diff guard.

Yep, totally agree Ron. I also needs to sit a lot closer to the diff pumpkin so clearance isn't so badly affected. Think mine was 250mm before fitting and 230mm (or 270 to 250) after fitting, and that's with 33" tyres, so maybe about 180mm clearance on a stock P38.

You could fry an egg on that!

Shovel.

I think you are right, Paul. If that hit something the wrong way, it would bend the studs back or strip the nuts off. And as the studs are inserted from within the diff casing.......

Paid enough to learn that I can build a better one for a lot less and stronger. My P38 is owned by my business (no, not Hard Range... the other one that makes money and pays my mortgage) so this is a tax write-off that I will get charged FBT on anyway... so I guess it did cost me a lot :o
Cheers, Paul.

Thanks for taking one for the team. I now know what I won't be putting on the back diff! :D

Seriously ordinary design.

What other diff protectors did you look at and choose this one??

Hi Steve - not much choice for the P38 so when I saw one for sale locally I bought it.

QT do a nice rear diff guard (see Ron's pic earlier in this thread) but I haven't seen a front from them.

RR Evolution also have some nice gear but the shipping from Europe is a killer.

Cheers, Paul.

Hey PAul,

Was that one of the $150 + P&H ones on e-bay a week or so ago?

I looked and decided that I had better stuff (coming from HRA!!!) to spend money on and could probably afford to bash a hole in a diff casing and pull a replacement from wreckers (or Andy E) for cheaper than the guard!

Only drama probably being the tow out after mucking the diff up...

Regards, Dave.

Yeah Dave, Gary had a few of them for sale. I could have picked it up cheaper from the wholesaler but I like throw stuff his way every now and then. He's looked after me in the past and this was a personal (other business) purchase not a Hard Range one.

It's been a learning experience anyway, and a tax deduction for my other business. I was hoping this one might save me the hassle of making another one, but I just couldn't do it.

There will be a Hard Range diff guard one day. I know what I want it to do and have a pretty good idea of how it will attach, and it will cover a lot more than the diff pumpkin. Gotta make sure it doesn't get in the way of accessing the sway bar disconnects though, and doen't turn in to a shovel when the diff rotates as the EAS height is increased :D

As for bashing the diffs... they're pretty strong anyway. I've given mine a few good whacks on rocks and they are still working

Cheers, Paul.

Shovel!, I don't care for the Qt ones either, I think the best is the ones that just cover the tin can and that's all, the housing is strong enough to take plenty of impact, its just the tin cover that need protection

The bloody freights the killer... not that any of the stuffs cheap anyway, but to then add the big shipping bills sux.

Ah well, I feel comfortable that (in time) HRA will provide a solid and more cost effective solution to all our OZ P38Armour needs! ;)

Aw, gee... thanks Dave :D you know Andy and I will do our best to "keep it real". Flo's stuff is good I am sure, but you are right, the shipping is the killer.

BTW: I must get around to doing a write-up on the adjustable panhard rod we had made and have just fitted to my P38  Just the thing for bringing the front diff back in to line after the lift. Keep an eye out for the adjustable rear panhard rod and rear anti-sway bar  coming soon as well.

Cheers, Paul.

I had a VW Beetle that doubled in value when I installed a stereo in it, but that's not important right now.....

Thats a rear one, not front (I dont understand rear diff guards, they are always a compromise of ground clearance, just incase you back into somthing). If that was installed on the front, the panhard would hit it.

Do you guys make one for the front too?

Andy

Edit, i just saw the 2nd pic. that thing hangs down below the axle tube a bit doesnt it?

Right that's a rear one.
Like you i don't understand people who install a certain type of diff guards at the rear (maybe they're running backward :D)
That one protects even forward.
See :

Yep the front diff guard may not suit european offroaders requirements who mainly run in mud. It's more a rock guard for the Atlas in Morocco.

I may adapt the rear diff guard unit to the front with some work.

Hey Andy, Just cuirious... have you got any more pic's to share yet? Interested to see how the snorkel and sliders are coming along? Also wondering if you will be making an adapter for the HRA bash plate for those that don't have a HRA bar to attach it to? Dave & pig

Andy's probably in bed by now... he's an early riser... I'm an owl.

Snorkel is finally off to the fabricator for first pre-prod model for my car :cool::cool: yes, there will be pics coming.

Sliders are still bits of metal lying on the ground and holes marked in the chassic for drilling mounting points. Deciding whether the plastic trim stays or goes a this stage.

Bash plate adapted to the HRA bar is the priority, then we can look at a standard bar plate.

The problem with making a bash plate for a P38 with a standard bar is that we don't have one any more :o unless Andy buys another wreck to play with.

I guess we shouldn't have too many problems finding a volunteer in Sydney with a standard bar, however that pool is drying up as our mates with P38's in Sydney are swapping over to the HRA bars :o

Adjustable front and rear panhard rods are coming too, as is a rear anti-sway bar. Front adjustable panhard rod is on my car at the moment for testing with the lift kit.

Cheers, Paul.

Sorry, I'm a little disillusioned on that one.
I find some diff guards are great crud collectors:(

To be honest, i don't like it either but if you go under a P38 you'll understand why nobody makes guards for those. On the front we have that sway bar so nothing standard fits.

Very true Flo, but have you ever tried high speed manouvers with that anti-sway bar disconnected? I'll put up with it thanks :D

I'll figure out something for diff and steering protection... Flo, you and I need to have an offline chat about "stuff"... you stuff is great but too expensive to buy and import here... and my stuff is too expensive to sell and export to Europe... hmmm, what to do? ;)

cheers
