I'd suggest that for 1) and 2) the member make a post in the "Members Rides" forum and can then post a link to that thread in this one. Otherwise we get duplication, or material in teh wrong places. I strongly encourage everyone to post your ride in the memebrs rides forum.
Cheers all.

Most capable for what?
There's some awfully tuff trucks out there that would be abysmal for touring, so whoever gets it is going to have to have a happy medium. And its not mine :(
For me:
If brutal good looks and absolute capability was everything, it'd be one of the more modded Defenders, maybe Tusker.
If comfort was a prime consideration, it'd be one of the 4BD1T converted rangies. V8s just don't get the range and torque of the diseasal.
But Isuzurover's IIa gets my vote, goes everywhere a Landy should, could seat up to 11, like all Series can be converted from truck cab to hardtop to soft top to open, can carry a big messy load and get hosed out afterwards, has decent fuel economy, from what i've read the power and torque is acceptable, and has more character than any rangie/disco/defender/freelander ever could!

Thanks! but I would be the last person to put either of my landies forward...
You raise a good point - the OP said "best" and "capable". Both of which are subjective and open to interpretation.
If most capable means outright offroad ability ONLY, then the list would have to include:
Mal's Bushie
http://www.highcountrycustoms.com.au/MalsBushRanger100%20CR.jpg
Sam's Mogrover
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2010/05/1074.jpg
Neither of the owners are members here AFAIK, but these 2 would have to be a couple of the most capable landies offroad in AU. And bear in mind, by capable I mean the ability to traverse the most severe terrain unaided by winches, etc... Attach any 4x4 to a big winch and you can have a "capable" winch comp vehicle...
Now you could also include rules on minimum (land)rover content in vehicles... But where do you draw the line. Any vehicle in the list would at least have non original axle internals, etc, etc, etc...

I'll go with the flow that the best is what you like. Having recently gotten my rangie, admittly already beefed up - it has really surprised all that I have been out with - has taken everything I have thrown at it so far even being a bit rough & heavy footed. She has gotten to places others haven't with out a winch & for a 4.6lt she does alright on the fuel as well which means I can go places.
Given this old beast is keeping up with the likes of desiel landcruises - far newer then her - for me its the best landy :D

One piece of advice I'd give every LR (or other vehicle for that matter) owner who was planning to do some trips in their car would be as follows:
Get a dual battery system
Get a auxiliary fuel tank or an log range one
Get a VHS so you can keep in touch with mates who might be tagging along.
Get a 2nd spare rim and tyre
Get a cargo barrier
You might include some bar work if it makes you feel better.
Next I'd get a sill water tank.
Once you have that you have all the Landrover you need. From then on it's personal choice.

That may be a good list for a touring vehicle, but what most would regard as a "capable" (offroad) vehicle needs none of that, but does need lockers, etc...

101 Landrover.
mine as set up now
dual batteries
110 litre main tank with two extra petrol jerrys and one water.
double locked...detroit in rear and ARB in the front with ARB diff covers front and rear.
bullet proof drive line from the factory.
water proof igintion system.
Fantastic power delivery of the rover V8....pure pussy.
Overdrive and tall high range gears.
Inbuilt standard tool boxes and mine has a extra large one to carry all my winching gear.
on board engine driven compressor.
serious ground clearence.
mine is fitted with a real mans steel four poster bull bar.
plenty of room in the rear and legal 1.5 tonne payload.
Old fashion landrover series rover type build and feel.
Axe shovel, crank handle, pick etc carried on standard brackets on front of vehicle.
two gun holders..
striaght forward to fix and work on.
Pto winch which will work out front /rear or even side ways from vehicle as per factory.( winch is self laying design.)
Deep low/low reduction from the factory.
light weight.
my 101 is fitted with LPG.
heavy duty running gear and cooling system etc.
the vehicle is small on the out side and yet big on the in side.
No air con, no power steering and heavy brakes etc....its take a real men to drive a 101 let alone to climb in and out of one.
real men for a real truck....:p:p:p
101 LANDROVER IT JUST DOESNT GET MUCH BETTER.

Haven't we all dreamt of the perfect vehicle to tour oz and come up with a kitted out 101
Well, I have, and for a while I thought it would be ideal, but then I woke up and realised:
They are not that comfortable.
They are tall and have a short wheelbase (see the pics of top heavy 101s going down steep slopes).
Lots of parts are hard to come by.
They are too tall to fit down many tracks (e.g. montezuma falls track in Tas - even a couple with a rooftop tent had to walk...)
They would use more fuel than a 110/130 with the same engine.
So while I think they are awesome, and I would love to own one, I don't think they would make the ideal tourer.

Now don't go rubbing it in ;), you're a lucky man, envy of most. I am only allowed to have one so have to make it an all-rounder. Always been a fender man, my first lany love was a SIII. 13th May 2010, 05:48 PM
Yes my back and kidneys could be in better shape.
I found the 101 has got a far greater angle of roll than other landrovers on side angles.( the centre of gravity is in fact low and only ambulance versions tend to tip and drivers not reading where the front wheels are going down a hill)
The height is barely any worse than a defender and the old 101s can be stripped or the windscreen lowered in good time.
They are not really that big and the wheel base is spot on for off road work.
It is the width that will stop a 101 going down a over grown track and that is if the owner cares about the paint work and body panels.
Creature comforts is what the 101s lack....as I said real men drive 101s:D:D

I'll nominate Shonky's 2A Ambo "Ambrose" because It's such a good example of that model
I'll also nominate GarryCol's 101 because he's come so far with it, PeterP's 101 and rapier trailer because of it's potential (which he is working towards) and Proud101owner's for obvious reasons. In fact, I'd like to nominate all the 101's, but then, I am biased.
haha awesome. Could not agree more :)

A well kitted Early range Rover or Disco is hard to beat.....they always impress me as a good alround package.
A good stage one series three with V8 donk with tricks is good too.

I like my county, im building it to be my perfect vehicle, thats why this thread will never see a real outcome because with land owners we all love our own trucks the most :)
But for capability, my county will have nothing on the next truck we build, Ive already organised most of the bits including volvo portal axles, a worked p76 motor, defender soft top body, rangie chassis etc etc etc just need to get my county done so i can start working on it, its going to be a build aimed at comps with the goal of eventually entering tuff truck :)

Although its not finished yet, my money is on Gaz69's duramax powered 130, not only a diesel, but a v8, stick a chip in it and it'll be good for 12second quarter miles:D

I'll throw my S1 Disco TD5 in the ring. Gets me everywhere I need to be. Comfy, reliable, enough grunt to get me into trouble, good on the fuel and I think it looks great.

Good choice Digger.
They run a very close second to the 101's.
They may even be level pegging.
