I'm really stumped as to how the cable detatches from the back of the guage! - 93 model defender
i need to get it out to fix some wiring issues and put new bulbs in, as well as make new mounts to hold the whole instrument panel in place!
only one is still holding, all others have broken away.
so HOW do you detatch this cable? - I can't really do anything until i have clear access.
thankyou very much for your helpful responses in advance...

They can be a bit difficult to get off as hand access is limited, but AFAIK, you just pull it off the back of the speedo.
Good luck

It's a nasty job and you normally end up with skin off from the sharp plastic edges of the dash and cluster body.
Push as much of the cable as possible through the firewall from the engine bay to allow you to pull cluster out as far as possible. Then you need to squeeze the plastic "ring" part of the clip on the end of the cable, and it will pop off. I think I may have had success in the past with using a pair of needle nose pliers.

Its also much easier if you whip the steering wheel off.
Gives the best access.

- plastic LR cover flick off with screw driver.
- undo nut beneath
- pull off steering wheel, watch alignment?
or in other words, whip it off!!!

My 110 has a two piece cable, which you can disconnect near the pedal box under the bonnet - and this allows you to pull the panel out so you can get at the back of the speedo to disconnect the cable. For some unknown reason this useful idea seems to have been discontinued on later ones!

Genious! I've been fiddling with the speedo / instrument cluster on my 120 for 2 days now (saw the connection under the bonnet) but never thought of disconnecting there!
Pure genious - thanks John!
Cheers
