im considering changing my territory turbo for a used d3 tdv6, i have seen a few 05 models for around nz$60k , but have seen a manual version with 7 seats,tr,ediff, and airsuspension for $45k, it sounds good , but is the manual a handicap? any thoughts please.

Hi farmernz,
Welcome!

This is a question that will elucidate recommendations based on what people have bought and not necessarily what they have tested.

I have tested both to a small extent. Some years ago, when the chance came to buy a manual D3, I jumped at it and am still very pleased with my decision.

The answer in your case will depend on what you are used to driving and what your future plans are.

Best Wishes,
Perter

I suspect if a manual D3 is the only one that fits your budget you will be very happy with it.

I was for a long time of the old school that a 4x4 should be manual, I have now changed my mind, an automatic with a command shift option 3 will let you do things on sand and on hills that are close to impossible with a manual. The terrain response also in my understanding works much more effectively with the automatic and believe me the terrain response if properly selected is awesome.

My preference is now definitely for an auto, but I dont think you would regret the manual either if thats what you can afford.

I didn't even know they had a manual option !
Bet they don't sell many of them.

Are the manual ones all base spec (coil springs not air) ?

I'm sure all the fancy push button gee-wizzery was designed to work with an auto box.

In Australia the manuals were all "S" spec. 5 seats, coil springs, no TR.

This is a personal import . Make sure they've got the paperwork
to sell it on . Do your vehicle transactions have to be through a
government office or is it just cash & run ?
Doesn't mention e-diff or air-susp in the ad .
What's this warranty they state . 2 years plus on an '05 ......... ummmmmmm ...

Hi Vlad,
I think that you are right that they didn't sell many in Oz (or UK). However, all 7 seater versions were air sprung, with terrain assist.

I have seen some SE and HSE manuals in the UK, but not many.

This, in no way means that the manual is a less-effective box.

Peter

I have driven 2 manual versions, Both being the "S" Spec in Aus. Thats how many we have sold:eek: through work....since 2005....
The clutch is light & the vehicle is nice to drive.

If a manual is what you desire, then as Pete has said they are no less effective than the Auto version.
Its a personal thing i guess.;)

All the best.:)

S Model was the only D3 sold in Australia new as a manual.
You could option 7 seats and Terrain response which gave you the equivalent of a SE without Xenon lights, fog lights and reversing sensors (and maybe a few other bits I can't remember now)
Cost to do this was very close to the cost of an SE with Auto.

UK :p

Tax incentives if you drive a small "CC'd" Engine & a Manual.

I believe the manual gearbox is the same as the one in the Puma Defenders.

I have seen one recently for sale somewhere in Aus that was a manual.

Blacklocks Albury had one at one stage, as my father test drove it but decided against due to lack of air suspension, and TR. Said it was a nice car to drive though.

Seano.

D3 TDV6 Manual...

AFAIK - I don't think it's the same gearbox as the Puma (The Puma has the Ford MT82).
I don't know about Oz but over here you can get the manual all the way up to the HSE spec!
There is a reason why the manual is sooo much cheaper than the manual... ;)
To drive the manual properly is quite difficult to do without stalling. This is coz it is sooo hard to hear the engine & the bite point on the clutch.

I'd suggest taking an auto out for a test drive so you can compare.

A manual gear box was/is a NCO on any D3 from SE to HSE.
I am thankful the dealer talked me out of going for the manual in an SE, love the auto!
Also, who would want a second hand D3 in manual? Not many I suspect.

Hi jonesfam,
I don't know where you get your "holier than thou" attitude, certainly not from experience!

If they shipped it back to the UK , it wouldn't fetch GBP14k and
there would be NZ$3500 freight costs too . The reality is that it's
worth under NZ$26000 to them .
