G'day all, Yet more drama's with the S1 Disco,.....
Hopeing someone knows where I can take the old bus, somewhere near Ringwood (Vic) where the wallet won't get reamed?
This time, doing 100kph on the freeway, she started a grinding noise up the back,... me thinks damn bearing....but nup can't be, 'cause 2mins. later, it's now a real rattle! 'Cause of where I was, traffic etc; I coudn't stop to look, but not far to go,....Now we have a "whirring rattle" like wire is wrapped around the diff & hitting the body underneath? The windows are down, listening, trying to figure this out then,...."Tink"..that distinct sound of a light piece of metal hitting the ground!.. Get out at the next set of lights, stuff 'em behind me!....nup...nothing, & nothing obvious.... 1k to go & I don't know what it was, or how to describe it, but something colapsed...no more noises, but she just doesn't feel right either, really hard to describe, just NQR.
She got me to work, & I've left her there. Got the back wheels off the ground, they turn easily, no wobbles, no noises, & noone can see anything obvious, so she's off on a trailer to where???
That's where I need your help guys......Where should she go where I won't get ripped?

Thanx Blknight, I thought that too, checked all over for anything like that. (had stones caught between the backing plate & disc rotors before) but it was heaps louder, (people in other cars were looking) & the noises varied from grinding to clunking so,.....hell I dunno???
Also, just when it dropped whatever it dropped, the car really felt like something had colaspsed, something in the driveline, no idea what, but she is definately NQR now....
Never heard anything like it before & I've had Patrols, Landcruisers & now the Disco,.....dare I say it,.......the Toyota is starting to look good again...

Did you have a good look at the drive shaft, especially the rubber coupling to the rear diff and the uni joints elsewhere?

Ya, Thanx Nice 1 Guv, had that replaced 2 weeks ago when it started a bit of a shuddering, checked it out closely incase they put in a brummy, but nup, looks good.........That's why I'm becoming more than just slightly "disillusioned" with the pommie product, hardly a week goes by without another visit to a garage, & another $200 -$300+ thrown at it!
No such thing with the Jappers!

Is that so, is it, well I had a "Japper" (toyota BJ40) nearly kill me when my brand new (2 weeks old) japper dropped the pinion nut off the rear diff allowing the pinion shaft to slide back into the diff, which locked solid causing the vehicle to do 3 complete spins, in the rain, on top of Gladesville bridge, in peak hour traffic.
Six months later all 4 springs and shocks were replaced, six months later I replaced all of the shocks with aftermarket items.
My mate bought a Nissan Patrol (3L), one month after warranty the clutch fell out of it, cost him $3,500 just for parts and Oh Yeh, the engine was replaced under warranty as well, seems you're starting to believe the propoganda spread by the opposition. BTW have you checked ALL of the Uni-joints, Regards Frank.

I had very similar noises and clunks and all your symptoms. Before it got really bad (ie, just squeaking) I jacked up rear and spun/shook wheel and it didn't feel too bad.
It ended up being one of my rear bearings - completely collapsed, don't know how it didn't seize/lock up, and couldn't believe that much noise and clunks were coming from it.
It managed to make it to mechanic who did all 4 corners, bearings and stub axles (they were corroded as well).

If this is not a troll:twisted:
I too had a wheel bearing fall apart but before that it made all sorts of noises. All stemed from broken seal and water getting into the bearing.

Jaysus Frank!
Sounds like you have had as much joy with Jappers as I have had with the Disco!
In the past 6 months, New Auto Trans, new "donut"? complete new rear brakes, bushes, tyres & I'm sure there was something else.......????
But I'm going to take a bit of everyone's advice, Lochie suggested A.M.V. & they really are just around the corner, So I'm going to get them to go over the damn lot,....
Blknight suggested shockys, springs etc;
nice1guv & your good self have suggested all the uni joints
Zuno555 & slug_burner reckon wheel bearings
So whatever it is will be tracked down! Thanks guys....
I've put the Disco is on notice, if after this it costs me another damn cent on the drive line within the next 3 years, it's e-bay fodder!

Except for the Auto trans problem most of your problems seem to be from consumables anyway, if you had to replace the complete rear brakes it seems to me that the former owner should have done brake maintenance more regularly.
you just can't wait till your brake shoes are metal only before you replace them, cause if you do you will have ruined the disc's and probably the calipers as well.
Doesn't matter what brand car you have, if you don't do preventive maintenance then it will cost a fortune to repair, Regards Frank.

They are all service items except the auto and it is probably due anyway since it is at least 12 years old.
Are you saying Japanese vehicles don't ever need to be serviced? Their tyres never wear out?
All that aside have you checked to see if your steering weight thingy is still attached to the end of the steering dampener?
It is a long shot given the noises you heard and it is up the front (can be hard to pinpoint locations of noises sometimes) but if it was swinging away under the car and then broke free of its retaining strap and disappeared you would never know it was missing if you didn't know what to look for.

Just got back from Trailering her to a guy I took her to when I 1st bought her, just shy of a year ago for her 1st service under my ownership.
(Sorry Lochie, A.M.V. couldn't help me for a week or so, too busy)
He seems an honest chap, & is going to give me a quote when he finds out what it is before he does anything, so I'll keep you posted, & ask your advise again (if you don't mind?) when we find out what the hell it was?
And don't get me wrong guys, if I didn't like the car, I wouldn't have spent 2 mortgage repayments I already have on her!
