Whats peoples advise on the new defender just had my 06 TD5 written off so iam looking for something else , do you think an 08 is a risk ? Seem to see quite a few of these for sale . Or you think go a new one and have the 3 years for the dealer to sort it all out . Will be a keeper as long as what happened to the last one doesnt happen again !Thanks

I would say unless your good on the tools of modern engines, new and have the warranty....

Whatever you choose to get, at least make sure you have at least one year of factory warranty left to sort it out. They are only 90% finished when they come out of the factory it seems.

I wouldn't buy one unless I could see all the service invoices....some have been flawless others have been problematic. It seems to me that the problem ones keep on being so.

Mine's not for sale BTW :p:D

x3 agree
If you intend to keep for a long time, then I would encourage you to buy new.
You get the warranty of course, but better than that, you know everything about the vehicle and don't buy anyone else's problems.
A 'clean slate' basically.
Go for it!

X4 - another thing to bear in mind - if it's still under any factory warranty, you can purchase 3 more years warranty - that costs about $2400.00 - consider this when doing the sums and making a decision.

Mines had allot of issues and it has been frustrating trying to get them sorted. Being my first Defender I find I'm not impressed with the build quality or the inherrent design flaws with the puma.
Having said all this, I admit that it has grown on me despite the problems. I'm getting more positive about it as issues get sorted and the list of stuff to fix gets smaller. To my surprise I find I love driving it, and when everything is working smoothly I prefer it to anything I've yet owned.
I would follow the advice already given; If you get one try for one with warranty, and hopefully you live near a good warranty repair centre.
As much as I like it I will probably get extended warranty because of my experience to date.

The one my son has,has been great, had a small problem with surface rust on the chassis, which was fixed by LR,but nothing else.......touch wood:)
As said,I would go for the youngest one you can afford,if possible go new.

Maybe - but check that you can get extended warranty cover if you are not the original owner.

does the original warranty even transfer between owners? I didn't think it did

There are many cars advertised with "factory warranty".
I took this to mean that the warranty would still be current for the new owner.
cheers
edit: BTW I've just bought an new defender 130 CS and am very happy with it.
It is just so nice to drive, yet to get serious with any of its capabilities, but hope to soon.

LR factory warranty is transferable to any new owner.....
3 - Year 100,000km Warranty
Vehicle warranty
Should any part of the vehicle require repair or replacement as a result of a manufacturing defect, the part will be repaired or replaced completely free of charge by any Land Rover dealer/Authorised Repairer, regardless of any change of vehicle ownership during the period of cover.

And the extended warranty offered by Allianze is available to anyone who buys a vehicle which is still under the original 3 year warranty. So, as I said in my first post here, this might be a consideration in the equation, in this situation, as put by the original poster of this thread.

So Scallops...is the extended Alliance warranty a factory warranty financed by an insurance company? Or is it like those dodgy used car warranties with plenty of ifs & buts?

I suggest you research both policy options which are available through LR dealers (Allianze and WCA) and make that call yourself. But the Alliaze policy is an insurance policy sold via selected dealers (some offer this one, others the WCA policy)
I am confident the Allianze policy will cover me for anything the factory warranty would have for an extra 3 years. My confidence is based on the many experiences I have heard about concerning this policy (search this forum, for example), and also by the report from MR Automotive concerning the policy, who do all my mechanical work. Better still, MR can do all my warranty work under this policy - chopping out the dealers altogether.

I ‘am like Pommy looking at purchasing a late model defender after I read all this about the need to have extended warranty I start to doubt the quality of the Land Rover product. Is it worthwhile buying a 08/09 model or should I look at a sorted TD5 or should I go to a different make altogether.

Well let's rule out Option C right from the start. That is the path of Satan.
So it leaves Option A or Option B, and it's really up to you. Option B: You'll get a TD5 for a lot less than you'll get a Puma, that leaves a lot of $ for spare parts, a new kitchen and a smaller mortgage, and there are lot of people here who love their TD5 Defenders. But the Puma is a better car and if you have the money to spend then get the newest you can afford.
