the diesels down on both power and torque but its torque curve is flatter and longer than the holdens.
The diesel beats it in all other respects, fuel economy, longevity, noise level is a bit hard to judge, it depends on a few other thing and depends on what you dont mind listening to.
the diesel runs on warmed up chip fat.

does anyone know what the holden fuel economy is

15-17l/100 depending on driving technique and actual installation (is it pushing 3.5s or 4.7's?.

i dont know i have not asked the guy yet as i only had a quick talk over the phone.what difference will 3.5s make compared to 4.7s and vice versa

If its a stock 202 it would be a bloody disaster. They cant sustain the revs needed to push the series gearing. If you want to go the Holden pluck the 202 and shove a 186 in. Cant kill them in stock form and seem happy to run at 4000 RPM all day. The 186 is OK on fuel if driven sensibly.

Fairly crap our isn't to bad but its been rebuilt. The power is good but you cant hear yourself think or you have to have the radio up loud to hear it.
Plus the gearing is terrible for the holden i have to get a highway transfer case gear set..
Honestly i would stay with the diesel. We have had both & i would go back to deisel if i could..
Plus with the holden will break things more easier gearbox, axles exc.

I was getting 14l / 100k with a high speed tcase - 70 Liter tank would give me 500+klms
If you are doing heaps of offroad go the diesel, as been able to go over 80kph won't really matter.
Holdens on the highway suck with standard series gearing (as would any motor except for maybe a rotary:cool:), unless you are willing to get the high speed final drive ratio sorted - there's no point of going the 202.

the 3.5 diffs make it useable onroad but sap it for offroad use with the 202 where as the 4.7 make it pull like a tractor and about as fast on road.
the 3.5's give you a better fuel return if you keep the throttle and loads light.

I would say the exact opposite - the blue 202 (3.3) has a balanced crank and will be much smoother and happier at higher revs, by a long way - but at 4k + revs it will suck some juice.

Yes its smooth but heavy on fuel especially If fatty driving she has lead foot..
But we do run a 350 holley..

the noise doesnt bother me and i dont mind driving slow to get a better fuel economy,i would prefer to have a diesel but this one has rego and my ute doesnt.if i get this 2a im not going to do an engine swap

I used to have a series 2 with a 186.
I had 2x 10 gallon tanks & 3 jerry cans across the back- and I still had concerns about enough juice.
4.7 ratio
Ran out of puff around 100klm/hr. I reckon 15mpg in old coin.

Yeah probably :D
What is it you're worried about? The gearbox?

yeah the gearbox if it will do any damage.but i dont want to use to much fuel either,if im only cruising at 80-90km/h i want to get decent fuel economy yes i do realise it is a petrol i would like to get 13-14L/100km but would i be able to get that and what if i went gas?anyonehave any information or advice on that

14L / 100k is easy but you have to fix the gearing and put it on a diet.
Gas - I was getting 300k from 70L hwy, whatever that is in L/100
I dont know what sort of figures a 202 would return at 80kph cruise in a series - I could never go there.
the box will be fine, dont go stupid in second - also make sure it doesn't pop out of gear. Drive it heaps before parting with the $$$, get on the freeway, back off in gear and see.
Why not swap the plates and tags with the unrego'd diesel you've got doing nothing ;)

Huh:confused: I can assure you second gear is bloody strong as the load is even on the lay shaft. I learnt this as had a turboed 202 in a series.
Broke a heap of boxes till I figured this out:eek: Trust me, go easy on 1st, give it some in second, don't labour 3rd and you wont kill 4th.

i wont be able to swap the engines though, without doing the oil rings on the diesel

I've got a 202 in my SIII and love it.
Reliable, plenty of power for my needs and I do 110 all day with no issues. Even towed my Subaru 400km home once, at 100kmph and there were no issues what so ever with the motor...and this was after 2 weeks of hard offroading.
With good gearing (like I've got) the engine is fantastic. Might convert to a 186 when I swap clutch, but other than that, no worries.
