View Full Version : So, who spellchecks their flyers?

We received a flyer from Action Motorcycles inviting us to a sale tonight/tomorrow night.

It was an "innvitation", they are having a "suasage" sizzle, a "bargin" bin, and we could save 25% "of" their accessories - 6pm "Till" 9pm.

Maybe it was a NSW south-coast advertising firm. There is at least one mob down there that regularly makes spelling errors in TV adverts.

That's disgusting - really. If I was the boss of Action Motorcycles, someone would be one testicle less today.

Spelling Miss Steaks on a document that is to be published and distributed are unforgivable.

In spite of the fact that I disapprove, I can understand why they occur on a forum such as this.

I could have suggestede that it probably happened because it was written by some illiterate bikie. However that would be unfair since I still remember being corrected 40 years ago by a member of Narrabri Motorcycle Club about my use of the word "less" in place of "fewer". :)

We are talking about a bikie here and you think I should have taken a swing at him. :D

Anyway, I'm not convinced that using "fewer" when it is appropriate is anal.

What does it mean if I say that I had to fix less expensive problems on the Defender this year compared with last year?

Does it mean there were not as many problems or does it mean there were just as many but they didn't cost as much?

If I remember what that bikie chastised me about and say "fewer expensive problems", then only one meaning is possible. :)

No, he wasn't what you would call a real bikie. I didn't want to let the facts get in the way of a good story. :p The truth is, he was about 17, a very nice bloke and a good friend of mine.

At the time, none of the people who rode bikes in Narrabri were anything like the image that bikies usually have. I remember that at one stage there was a Methodist minister, a bank manager and several school teachers who rode motorcycles.

Once when I was feeling in a particularly provocative mood, I wrote a letter to the editor of the local paper pointing that out and suggesting that the local councillors could save ratepayers a lot of money if they were supplied with motorcycles instead of Holden Kingswoods as company transport. Council was not amused and actually wrote a response in the next edition of the paper.

Oi - I'm a Brian and I don't like your insinuation here.

On the original topic though - we don't need to read flyers to see this type of spelling. You wanna check out the local newspaper in Kalgoorlie. :o

They obviously don't employ anyone in the role of "proof reader".

Proof readers disappeared in the early 70's along with hot metal type
set by tradesmen called linotype operators and the linotype mechanics who maintained the machines.

It's also amazing how many people have trouble with their breaks. I'd be happy not to have any breaks on my Landy providing the brakes work OK.

Tho I wouldn't want to go under a tree and break my ariel!

We had the fliers delivered for a show our company is having in Melbourne in July, and on the front page in big bold letters:

"Your Invited!"

I opened the box, pulled out the first one, and didn't know if I should laugh or cry :D

I really can't understand the need to correct all grammatical errors of people.
Have you nothing better to do??? If that is some ones worst mistake then god bless them. I for one would rather you discuss how to help the homeless population of our country.

Watch the movie "Idiocracy".... It will help explain what ishappening in the world.

In my opinion bad spelling and grammar are the "thin edge of the wedge" and the start of a "long and slippery slope". :p:D

Seriously though, if written material is for professional purposes (job ads, flyers, etc) then the spelling and grammar should be spot on.

and ironically it is generally accepted that the best way to help people get on their feet is to educate them.

So by improving literacy we are helping the homeless, in our own little way.
