Good ol simo stuffs up again!!

WELL.....

stupid stupid me left the rego on my 300tdi disco run out due to not being able to afford it (And just finding out you can pay half if your a concession holder which i am) and today when i decided to take the truck for a drive to the super market i get pulled up for expired plates. $580 later and plates being ripped off the truck i have to get it re-roadworthy and new rego. i know of a few things that i'll need to fix for the roady like,

Prob's so far..

brake vacuum pump leaking, right hand light cracked, small chip in windscreen, ripped drivers seat, roof rack spots (Need to come off), leak from power steering resi (think its one of the hoses), swap tyres from muddies to near new A/T's, is there anything else to look for?? if anyone can help with second hand parts let me know.

NOW i new it was wrong and i new what would happen if i got caught and bloody stupid for doing it but i'm asking now how hard is it to get it back on the road ASAP as we dont have another car and my wife has no way to get to work as theres no PT at the moment where she is as it all a new estate. money is very tight at the moment and we where suposed to move next month and can not touch the money we borrowed for that reason as we have been waiting for nearly 2 years to move from this hell hole . im thinkin on the lines of getting a perment from vic roads in melbourne victoria , going to get a RW done and see whats the go. then find second hand parts and do the work myself.

i cant remembered last when i regoed a car so i have little idea on whats the go. if anyone can shed some light i would be greatful. Seriously i dont really need any smartass comments right now as i'm frustrated and stressed as is, just looking for a guide to get my truck on the road asap. i know it was wrong and i take fully credit and dont need any **** right now lol.

generally if its not leaking (its a landrover good luck) and everything works they go over ok.

Most mechanics will "know a bloke" or have a call out roadworthy guy and generally the way it works is this.

you get your first inspection and they find something wrong. you pay to get it fixed, they "fix it" at a cost and you get your rego passed. then down to the RTA or equivelent with you with the provided documentation. These guys generally wont pass something thats dangerous tho.

There are less scrupulous operators out there tho who will do carton/phone worthies. I just dont know any in melbourne.

A few tips... Watch the fastest indian first.

if you need to borrow the correct size rubber for your vehicle if theres anything at all questionable about your tyres that might cause an inspector to start looking at your steering or suspension.

Clean up the areas where you VIN/Chassis and Engine numbers are, I goto the effort of rubbing chalk on mine to make it quick and easy for them to find the numbers so they spend the minimum amount of time possable, Carry a torch so you can show them EXACTLY where these numbers are.

Provide the old rego papers so they have the old numbers on hand to go off of (I have been failed because of a typo on the paperwork from the front desk of the RTA to the person doing the verification of said numbers)

IF you know you are exempt from certain things by the ADR's carry the relevent edition of the RDA's that reflect this in your vehicle.

at the end of the day you make their job easy and they are more likely to pass you.

Had a rough idea on that's what should be done, well what I wanted to do. Currently trying to work out how to get the permit and rwc and fix whatever needs fixing myself.

Thank you so much for the information. Will take all that on board for sure as I will be starting to fix things tomorrow. In one way I would rather do it the legal way as in the end my truck will be better and all fixed up plus as I'm doing everything myself I'll learn a few things, in another way (money and time wise) would be good just to get the bloody rwc in another way lol. No - get it the best you can before, the better it looks and is, the less they'll look.

Also, how long has it been out of reg? If it wasn't long (under 2 months???), normally no RWC is required to renew the reg - could be different as they took your plates :(

GPS mount/sticker over the windscreen. Seat cover. Clean the engine just before you go in so there are no drips for that half hour.

Light needs fixing, if the vacuum problem affects braking it'll need sorting.

Take it to a mechanic who has serviced before and knows you'll come through to fix problems.

And if it's a Defect Notice you have to address all of the points that they've found and the mechanic doing the blue slip has to check them off.

Tough new mate. First do it the right way and get the temp rego permit, put all the road gear back on give it a good wash under, over and engine bay. Repair the obvious things and then get it road worthy and see what needs to be done. It may surprise you and pass easily. Don't leave things for them to find, do it yourself. If you need some work done, eg: change the break fluid as I did, I took it to a tyre place and got a roady at the same time. Look after them and they look after you. You just got some tyre work done, do they do road worthies. Let me know if you need a hand and I'll see what I can do.

I just spoke to someone who this happened to and they did not have to take it to Vic Roads but had to make an appointment to get new plates and process. Depends how long the reg has expired.

Bout $841.20 to re-register, based on a dutiable value of $4,000. $729.60 for healthcare card holders.

Plus around $99 for the certificate, then any parts required and the labour to fit those parts.

I doubt he'll have to go to the Vic roads filth as there has been no transfer of ownership. worst case i reckon is a Roady - best case is just coughing up for the rego..

There is a 3 month grace period to pay the rego, after that the registration is cancelled, flagged on the VicRoads system and the plates can be taken from that point.

Simon, I trust a traffic car out your way got you? Colour coding each year's rego sticker sucks. PM if there is anything you need - don't have D1 parts though :( . I think you're out Werribee way?? I would offer a lift if I was closer. :cool:
