I bought one & decided its too much weight on the Isuzu, so I'm shopping around for a synthetic rope & aluminium fairlead.
Best so far is $349 all up.
With the winch @ $399, less - say $100 if i sell the cable, roller fairlead & damper, I might as well have bought this- it looks identical, with the bonus of more capacity- Doh !!

How much weight is too much weight? How much weight will you save with the synthetic rope and aluminium bits?

14 KG According to my bathroom scales - plus the Synthetic rope weight...
I am still considering having no cable permanently fitted and carrying a 12m & 28m wire cable away on trips. Then just use as required.:)
It has its benefits.- nothing to get pinched or used by vandals for starters.

"nothing to get pinched or used by vandals for starters"
I have a kill (isolator) switch located under the bonnet so this cannot happen, well the vandal bit anyway. Very cheap insurance from idiots.
Never heard of anyone having a cable pinched.

According to the owners manual, this winch can draw up to 410 amps under full load. Hard to find an isolator than can handle that. 250 seems the biggest & they cost a bomb.
There has been comments on this forum of isolators burning out & having to be bypassed.
I've never heard of cables been pinched either. I've had a few things thieved, they even got under a car cover, into a locked Rangie & removed the rego sticker & plates:eek:. So I'm a bit paranoid I guess..:)

I know what he means I have bird caged mine a couple of times....
sometimes when pulling a heavy load if not watching your winch draw in the cable can cross over crushing the cable below it...
However I would of thought 100bux for a wire was excessive. I have on in the shed and I was going to put it on for 30bux brand new...although decided to keep it and change over the one that we have managed to slightly damage in places.
Then after that synthetic will go on....and I think the synthetic does make a difference to weight.

I know its an extra $200 but the tigerz winches are slightly lighter and have a 3 year warrenty as opposed to a 90 day warrenty.

Got to agree, the Terms and Conditions look a bit "iffy" to me, I would tread VERY carefully!!!;)

Both my winches run 500amp continuos at 12v isolators with a 2500amp maximum for 5 seconds, and both are fused with 500amp fuses.
Suitable parts are out there if you look around.

their terms are worded very badly they and you cant sign away your statutory rights if they sell an unsafe or faulty product they are still liable if you can find them:o

Hey Deejay,
It doesn't look like anyone is going to offer to take the winch off of you hands given where this thread has gone so if you don't want to keep it just take it with the receipt back and they will refund you your money.
I took the compressor back few days after buying it as it blew up straight away and they gave me my money back no questions asked.
cheers,
Terry

If I am reading it right the steel cable and fairlead weighed in at 14Kg
That seems pretty light, I think about 25Kg is more reasonable so it must be a very short cable or a very thin cable ???
Anyway, a dynamica rope of 30Mtr by 8mm is about 2.5Kg but about $350.

Absolutely right. I've fitted an isolator with a similar rating.
I've also fitted a fuse but a 400 Amp mega-fuse rather than 500 Amp, which was my original intention.
After much reading I realised that mega-fuses are a time delay fuse and a 500 Amp mega-fuse will not blow at a current of 500 Amp until its carried that current (if I recall correctly) for about a minute.
On the other hand, a 400 Amp mega-fuse will also carry a 500 Amp current but only for about two seconds before blowing. I figure that if I'm about to push my winch to its maximum current (490 amp) then that's the time to use a snatch block.

Basic key type isolators can handle 1000 amp draw for 10seconds, $30 from supercrap.
My Ironman winch even came with one in the box.
I used mine with very heavy duty cable and proper connections for quite a few winch pulls with no dramas.
In my opinion you must have an isolator, I have seen solenoids fused on and had the winch spooling continuously, was a mad rush to open bonnet, toolkit, find a spanner, and disconnect the winch lead to the battery.

Or, fit an isolator to the control side, that stops any naughty peoples, you can fuse the winch supply, but you don't fuse your starter supply either;)

If you buy a winch as discussed and plan to use synthetic ropes, I have heard it pays to get a winch that does not have the winch brake in the spool drum. Some synthetic ropes don't take kindly to some of the heat that can build up on some uses of the winch like decents, and lots of start stops under load.
I use a wire rope on my winch but not the full capacity. I run only 20metres of rope on a winch capable of running 35-70m. Benefits are many and inconvieniences are few. Benefits include lighter weight (than a full spool), less amps being drawn as rope 'pull' is closer to drum. Wire ropes also work best in the rocky environment I find myself in most often. I also use it to pull logs (firewood) around to work on. In most of my winch jobs a pull of less than ten metres is required to see me out of the hold-up. If I require more winching and the anchor is beyond 20m I carry a collection (20m+20m) of ARB strap winch extenders.
Cheers,
Phil
