Posting this for a mate, he's got a 2000 model 130 defender and he's dropped it off at the local trans/diff shop to get a air locker fitted. Now i haven't seen it but apparently theyv'e had it for two weeks and still cant get the centre out, theyv'e used diff spreaders and lumps of pipe and it wont budge. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions/tricks to getting it out.

Not every town in Aus has land rover specialists, thought a dedicated land rover forum would be a good place to start but maybe i'm wrong.

Shouldn't have to be a LR specialist to get a salisbury diff centre out. They are just a Dana afterall.

A jeep or F-truck specialist - or anyone who works on trucks with dana axles, should know how to remove a salisbury.

It is fairly easy:
Drain oil
Remove axles (halfshafts)
Remove diff pan
Remove bearing caps
Use a couple of tyre levers or a crow bar to remove the centre (I have never needed to use a spreader to remove or refit).

The only way I can see it being difficult is if the bearing outer races have spun and welded themselves to the housing, or the pinion has seized (in which case undo the pinion nut).

They know what there doing, The centre just wont budge. I thought maybe there was a retaining bolt or something hidden somewhere that they dont know about. The pinions not seized as he drove it in there but maybe the carrier bearings have spun or worn some sort of groove thats stopping it from coming out.

Some of us here have dropped them out on a cold shed floor.
I just don't understand why a diff specialist is having dramas.

I have got all mine out with no spreader. That is three different Land Rovers. They're not that tight. Just bring it out nice and straight.
If it wont budge something is wrong as Ben has pointed out. The vehicle in question is quite young, so I would imagine the Sals would be in good condition so long as had oil in it.

Ditto, although they weren't Sals, they were D60's, but same-same.

At work we always use a spreader to remove the centre, (not saying they don't come out without it, it just makes it easyer)
Sounds like something is wrong, might have been setup wrong with way to many shims or something, does it have any back lash??
Our spreader at work is an ARB one, and will suit pretty mush all the dana style diffs, so if you can get hold of one of these you should be in buisness, they are meant to be hard to remove but not as hard as this one sounds.....

CHEERS TIM.

I wonder how they are assembled when new, does the crown wheel and pinion fit in the cetre before the axle tubes are put in place, if that was so could the axle tubes be fitted into the centre housing a mm to far each side. Just wondering

No, not possible. The tubes would be pressed in and plug welded, then the machining/finishing of the housing would probably be done after, then the diff inserted and set up. The diff would need to be removed and refitted a few times during setup.
