As you may have read I am looking at a RRC 1987 with LT77 manual box and fully enginereed by MJK Dicscovery 1996 300tdi

I have been told the gearbox was rebuilt when the engine was implanted and the transfur case was done about 90000km ago

I am heading to look at this rig on Saturday,

Is there anything I should be looking for specifically?

thanks,

I have a 87 RR and have had for around 20 years now.
Mine has done 450K so a lot of issues will be milege and general maintenance records of your vehicle rather than specific problems with that year model. I would look for general wear and tear, leaks, (oil, water, fluids from steering box. etc). Other things to look for is rust in the tailgate and doors (bottom corners closest to hinges). Check the electrics, windows work, central locking working. Check all normal things such as gearbox and drivechain noises and driveability.
If you like the vehicle and it stacks up for value then when you get it home give a full service and change out the oils etc.
Then let the fun begin.

Rust in the floor!

This is mine. I knew it was there, but not how bad. I only paid $1k though so I am not complaining. ;)

Look for any sort of history.

Aneglectec car can mean $$$$.

The tdi is great and does well with a tune and D-gas.
Check for noises, clunks and any electrics that should be working.
Air con often goes.
What extras it has like lockers, bull bar, lights and dual battery set up or snorkel.
This all costs money and if they are fitted, make sure they are properly fitted and working.
My 87 model had electrical gremlims no sparky could find and was reason I sold it.
I think too many K's on gravel and wires and fittings were tired.

For the right money, could be a bargain.
A conversion would set you back at least $7k depending on what work you do and state of motor.

Sounds good and happy buying.
Oh, if not sure best to get a landy mechanic to check it out.;)

Thanks for that I am worried when you say let the fun begin, I hope you mean many good times ahead, not the fun of fixing it:D

Thanks for that, The AC has gone he told me that, I forgot to mention that I have a donor in the back yard that is an 88 with the 3.5 that has gone, everyting else is good.

I hope the eletrics have been fixed as the tdi shouldn't have as many elec probs.

I have been told that the seal at the back of the transfer case has gone, he said he has another but has not had time to fix it.

Shonky:

I am sorry if I have made you relise how much rust you have in your Rig,

I remember my wife had a friend in New Castle who owned a coral pink RRC and you had to watch were you put your feet due to the lack of floor in that area.

Thanks guys keep the comments comming,

I love the RRC breed so I need to be able to put on my sensable hat before I look at it or I will just buy it as I miss my RRC's

Hi Banjo,
Well my reference of "let the fun begin" refers to both.
Hopefully you wont be under the bonnet as much as I.

It had too much rust in the body, but not were was mentioned above, for what he was asking

I needed a rear main oil seal but was otherwise mechanically good, drove well.
