This is how I store my winch cable:

I believe it is not recommended by manufacturers to hook it over a recovery point and tighten it.
Has anyone fitted anything to their fairlead to pull the cable in a bit tighter on the drum?
I have seen this but I think it's pretty large (about 125mm)

I don't buy their argument in that link that their product is a safer attachment in case the cable breaks during operation.
The whole point, surely, is that you dampen whipping of the broken cable by using something with a lot of wind resistance.
I don't care how soft that little rubber thing is; it wouldn't slow the broken cable down at all.

They have a site it seems:angel:
Master lock atv winch, fairlead, bare winch, atv winch kits, atv winch, winch hooks (http://www.winchsaver.com/index.html)
Interesting but too big IMO. Think I might make something a bit neater.

I don't either, and as I run synthetic that is not my concern at all. More interested in being able to wind the cable in with a bit of tension without the hook mangling the fairlead.

what's wrong with hooking the cable onto a recovery point or similar?
(unless you're a dud, overtighten it and rip out ya recovery point :p)

I use 2 occy straps.
the first attaches the hook to the recovery point or side of the bull bar (usually the top when off roading because when your winch is under water and its cold its easier to get to) and a second one that loops around the rope and pulls it to one side.
Im not sure but I showed Icefyre this trick on the cape trip. It keeps the cable taught but allows for a little movement so when your winding in that last little bit you dont stress anything and its dead easy to remove even with gloves on.
The last advantage is that it gives you a couple of occy straps that you can use to make sure that things stay in place while there slack in the line while you're setting up your recovery.
