Hi folks,
Just bought a 1999 TD5 Land Rover Defender 130 with 165k on the clock. I was finding that 2nd gear was a little hard to select sometimes when the box was warm and put it down to needing an oil change,
then suddenley this afternoon, after trying unsucessfully to select reverse i lost all meaningful gear selection, cant get 1st at all when i select reverse i seem to get 4th although i do get the reversing lights. there are no strange noises from the gear box but the gear lever seems all wrong.
luckily not far from home and managed to get back in 2nd which did not seem to be fully engaged.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Regards, Dave

Look under the rubber boot around your gear stick (remove the boot) you may even have to lift the cubby box and lift the panel above the transfer case to get a look at your selection plate (the bit that restricts the gear lever from going into no valid gear selection positions) suspect that your problem will be there, some fastners have come loose.

try and down load the releavant manual from this site.

someone more knowledgeable than I will be along soon to give your more detailed advice.

Hi

It could be the selector fork(s) come loose on their shaft, so essentially not moving much or correctly when you attempt to change gear.

Good luck

Check your clutch master/slave for leaks or low fluid - wetness under the clutch pedal. I've had the mystery shift with clutch master leak.
