The Phantom and the Whirlwind were not British. The Whirlwind was a licenced build of a Sikorsky S55 (albeit heavily modified to British standards).

What is the first aircraft? No caption on it or the image further down.

I thought it may have been a Short build - it had that look.

At least in those days the planes looked very different, unlike now.....

Some of them, as the markings clearly show, were RN, not RAF - and quite a few of them were not exactly "operated" - by the RAF, rather they were prototypes that were tested by the RAF, although I suspect some of them, even if designed with the RAF in mind, never saw an RAF pilot in the cockpit!

Funny out of all of them, only a couple looked "right" :

The Hunter and the Vulcan.

My memories as a kid in the UK during the 60s was that the TSR2 was scrapped with only one or two prototypes ever flying, you could buy bits of the TSR2s as keyrings etc after it was scrapped.

I remember it was certainly a very unpopular decision at the time. (not that I understood too much about politics). Seemed that there was a lot of discussion about it being too advanced and a lot of pressure from the US to abandon the project. True ? - who knows

I love the V-bombers and the Vulcan was the best of them.

That Shorts Belfast is a huge thing too.

There's just one left flying.. owned by HeavyLift

The thing can carry a Hercules fuselage inside it !

I had the privilege of a "tour" of it, and the only post 1960s electronics on board was a GPS velcroed to the dash !

Short Bros. made some strange looking jiggers. Makes one wonder what they were smoking in Belfast. What is the un-named oddball, under the Short SB3 with the Willy Mason Chin?

Would I be correct in thinking the Avro Tudor 8 is a repowered DC3?

Found this site which seems to give a good run down on what happened with the TSR2 and the issues around it.

Same as the top pic, Juddy tells us it is a Short S.A.4 Sperrin (VX158)

Supposedly developed from the Lincoln Bomber. See http://www.aviastar.org/air/england/avro_tudor.php

The Avro tudor 8 sure looks like a DC3 to me.

The Shackleton was the last in the line of Manchester-Lancaster-Lincoln.

The Short Sturgeon looks very much like a deHavilland Mosquito.

No, you are correct. I didn't want to take the credit. :D
