View Full Version : Spare wheel bonnet mounting

Hello Folks,

Feeling rather dim (again). :( I just can't see how 2 long bolts, the disc thingo on the bonnet and 2 of these "clips" in the picture can hold a spare wheel in place.

Am I missing some other bit?

Hi Dan,

From the one photo I can see anything in a book I have it appears that the bolts go through the clips with the clip facing downwards. I could scan the photo in if you need it. Also could have a look through the later parts manuals.

Here is the page from the manual for you. Doesn't really show much but shows one bolt and clip.

Thats all there is BUT there is 2 types of clamps
a set of clamps for the series 1 has a shorter leg for the standard series wheels. There is a longer clamp for the LWB rims that the leg is longer.......

That is all there is. Provided you have the correct clamps for the size wheel and tyre, they do work reasonably well. A problem with some of them is that the threads in the mount and/or the bolts may be stripped so it is impossible to tighten it enough so the tyre doesn't move.

And the one you have there looks like the longer legged version.

Aren't these the right bits? Be surprised if they are not - it's more that I'm daft and can't see how they hold a wheel in place!

Put the wheel on the bonnet shiny side down

Those clips will rotate onto the 'inside' of the rim. You will find that the bolts, when installed, aren't too far from the edges of the hub hole in the centre of the rim.

Dunno what you mean :( - can someone post a photo sometime from above so I can see how this works?

The clips go with the long leg down. With the curved side of the clip out, the wheel, with the outside side down will fit over the clips so they come up through the centre hole. Then turn the clips so that they are overlapping the wheel and tighten the bolts. The bolt, when tightened, should pull down the the wheel and the long leg of the clip comes down on the mount. With the head of the bolt sitting flat on the clip, and the leg hard against the bracket, the tyre should be compressed against the rubber mounts.

It will not be secure if the tyre is flat, or if the clips are the wrong ones for the size tyre, or if the wheel has non-standard offset. The two types of clip are designed for 600-650x16 and 700-750x16 tyres on swb or lwb respectively wheels.

What he said

I have just dragged a spare bonnet into the garage from outside and I have a rim here with no tyre on it - but I will do a couple of mock-up shots for you and post them.

OK - thanks - I follow your instructions, John - but I can't see why the clips are shaped as they are - what function does the little "up" bit have? And what is the purpose of the longer "down" bit? And why are they curved?

My wheels are 16 inch - tyres are 6 X 16.

I would have thought - with my rims and tyres, I'd need to have the short bit down - otherwise the clip will sit at near 45 degree to the bonnet.

See - I'm daft! :D

When you put the wheel up onto the bonnet, there is going to be a bit of a gap between the centre of the rim and the top of the bonnet, depending on the 'fatness' of your tyres.

In my case, with a totally flat tyre, I use the short bits down so that the end of the short bit touches the bonnet and the 'arm' is flat so the bolt drives correctly onto it (not on an angle). When the tyre is pumped up, I have the long bit in the down position for the same reason.

Now - I am a bit different - because I don't have the pins in the end of the bolt in the engine side of the bolt so I can remove the bolt completely to change the 'length' of the sticking down bit. Most of the rovers I have seen do have the bolt pinned so that means they can't remove the bolt and they can only use the one 'dimension'.

Now - I have taken a couple of pictures but it sounds like you get the idea of what's going on so you don't need them posted?

OK - will be a couple of minutes - taking the bonnet back outside.

yes, you're missing some bits, the mount to the bonnet that has the bolts that hold them down.

When I bring the axles back I'll bring them back in fozzy and you can have a look at how it all works.

OK - 4 pics. Click on them for a bigger view.

The bits of wood are to emulate the height/gap if there was a tyre on the rim.

ah - now I see why you were confused. Your wheels are shiny on the inside as well as the outside :D

That's a beautiful vehicle you have. Awesome that we were able to help.

I gotta admit that it is really good for me to see in pictures how that actually works. The long leg touches down and creates the pivot point for the pressure to hold the whole lot in place. Probably gives a much better balance of forces than if it just pivoted off the bolt.

So thanks all from me as well :). And glad you got it sorted Dan, now off to read about your brakes.

You'll have to do something about those bolts, no where near the standard of the rest of the vehicle.:p

ok, now that you've got it on..

take it all off again then wire brush and then dip the 2 brackets in tool dip or liquid rubber this protects the paint and metal work as well as increasing the grip of the bracket.

The closed bit was just me saying I'd sorted it out! Thanks for the kind words, mildred - I can't really take the credit though - harry Ho Har painted her for me.

But thanks - I hope I can get her going soon and without further great expense, 'cos otherwise it's eventually just going to all be for someone else's benefit, I'm afraid :( My cash (and wife) only stretch so far.
