If it's like that where visible you can bet there are other rust issues.

If its a vehicle you want to keep for a long time you cannot show any tolerance for rust.

I has similar rust in my 2a bulkhead. I had to strip the bulkhead of most parts, cut the rust out with a grinder, make patches from sheet steel to match the cut holes and then point my welding friend at it. Then smooth down the welds and a skim layer of bog. Now I'm sure the rust is dead and gone and it looks like a new one... almost.
Check it here:

The photo you posted, shows an area where panels overlap and therefore moisture inside the bulkhead can gather there and rust the seam.

If it is the only rust you can find, then you can cut it out with an angle grinder and weld in a repair patch without dismantling the car.

Other places to check for rust are: under the pedal-box mount; where the bulkhead mounting brackets join the bulkhead; where the reinforcing plate for the pedal-box is spot-welded to to the bulkhead; any other areas where you can see panels spot-welded together. Stab suspicious areas with a thin screwdriver and then decide whether it is worth taking the bulkhead off for a re-build,

look at the plus side once you have checked it and cut out all the rust and repaired it you know it should be right for a fair while

You've got a thoroughly unique vehicle, so spending time making everything right will allow you to know your vehicle better too

hi

i will have a better look at the rust on Friday. hopefully its only the size it is right now and hasn't gone anywhere else. my plan is to just cut it out and the weld a fitted piece of metal back there. will keep everyone posted with info and photos as the process continues.

P.S.

does anyone no why my car doesn't have locks on the doors.

The ho har's

Because it is a series 2a...if you want locks replace those with series 3 ones.

No locks on doors? Probably because they weren't standard fitment, mine didn't have any either when I got it.

You will be better off with some sheet steel about the same thickness as the bulkhead panel.

I use 1mm cold-rolled, which is very easy to panel beat to shape,

I'm sure that rust didn't grow from the outside in. It comes from the inside out. Water must be getting in there. Check areas above the rust. Take special attention of the metal under the vent seal.

Its can be a rotter... literally.

im asuming most people know this but i will say it anyway rust is the metal oxydising and the atoms in the metal move up the steel so thats why you have to check even though it might just be rusted through in a part doesnt mean its in other areas most likely it is
