Puma Engine Oil Specs

Hi guys,

I was wondering what oil the Oz LR stealers are putting in your Pumas? Over here in SA the manual specifies Castrol Magnatec A1 5w30, conforming to WSS-M2C913-B specs.

However, quite a few independent mechanics are of the opinion that the 5w30 is too thin for the SA climate, and seeing how Oz climate is somewhat similar to SA's, are you guys also using 5w30 or something slightly thicker?

I asked Castrol a few years ago incase I needed to buy oil for my '08 Defender, this was the reply:

Hi Tim,
Thank you for your technical enquiry.
As discussed, please contact Land Rover Customer service with your vehicle serial numbers/details and they should be able to confirm whether your particular model has a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) fitted or not.
If you do have a DPF fitted then suitable engine oils that will be compatible with this device include Castrol SLX Professional OE (SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade) which is only available in 20L drums and larger packs and Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40 which does come in smaller/retail-type pack sizes.
If you find that your particular model doesn't have a DPF then you can safely run Castrol Magnatec Professional 5W-40 in the engine compartment.

Castrol Edge 0W-40 meets the specifications and this is what I use.

That said the best mine has run is from the oil changes at MLR where they use the Magnatec Pro 5W-30. The worst is Valvoline closely followed by Mobil. Valvoline lasts about 500km and then the engine sounds like a bucket of bolts. The Mobil would last about 1500km before needing to be changed.

Puma spec is same as TD5,that is full synthetic,as said 0w/40,or 5w/40,or 5w/30.
MR auto here use Valvoline Syntec,i think they call it,full synthetic,5w/40,no problems.They are LR specialists,there's not much about LR's they don't know.

Castrol Edge is fine as it is full synthetic.Magnetec is listed in the Castrol data for TD5,but i don't think it would be as good as the full synthetic oils.
Full synthetic allows for longer intervals between changes.

As a follow on, Penrite have full synthetic oils for engines with DPF's.
e.g. ENVIRO+ 0W-40 or 5W-40 which I can purchase more easily than the castrol products. Check with Penrite who are always helpfull.

Although for the 2.4 Puma (which doesn't have a Diesel Particulate Filter as far as I know) Penrite recommends HPR Diesel 5 (5w-40 semi synthetic)

I use Pennzoil 5w40 full synth or Shell Ultra 5w30 full synth.

Me too, though I think Castrol was used at the last service.

PS geez I wish this thread was around back at Christmas, when I was stuck in Bright, about to head into the high country, with the dipstick below half way, LR customer service not answering their bloody phone and my dealer shut for the holidays...
