Great idea and something suggested to me by a Land Rover engineer when the engine was first introduced (there were a number of injector failures due to dirty fuel under warranty in '98-'99 and the cost to Land Rover Oz then was approx $2000/injector)
I'd use a filter head that uses the Delphi/Lucas/CAV 7111-296 cartridge.
Cheap as chips and common all over the world.
I think the Delphi/Lucas/CAV elements have a rating of 2 microns. Other brands may not match that rating.
Part # 5863-B100 uses the glass bowl housing, # 5863-B120 uses the aluminium bowl.
The only thing I'm unsure of is that they have the capacity for the tank fuel pump used in the unit injector system.
{edit} the other thing to check is what pressure does the in tank pump push ? IIRC the 7111-296 is only rated for about 10psi, most are mounted in a suction application and those mounted after a lift pump aren't subjected to very high pressure.
Maybe best to contact Delphi in the UK to check.
Don't use a petrol style inline filter, they just aren't good enough, either in flow or filtration.

At the filter on the TD5 if the fuel regulator is doing its thing there will be 4 bar.

Picked up a couple off ebay after Brian Hjelm recommended them. Of course, still waiting to be installed.

Thanks Mike, so it looks like the old CAV filter might not cut it.
Bugger.

the whole system is pressureised...
about your best bet would be to tap the tank and plug in a seperate pump and filter that runs whenever the engine is on and has an external power feed so that you can just plug it in at home.
