Hi all,
I'm just about to take delivery of my shiny new D4 :D (but that will be the subject of a separate post).
I tend to use my vehicles for carting around a lot of junk and as a result destroyed the cargo area of my previous LandCruiser (hope the buyer isn't reading this). I've been looking at ways of protecting the back of the D4 because I don't want to wreck it as I did the with Cruiser.
I've had alook at the Flexible Loadspace Protector VPLAS0015 on the D4 accessories listing and it seems to do what I want. However, I don't really want to pay LR prices. Also I don't really want to wait until they ship one from the UK (had to wait six months for a car!).
Up the road from us is a small motor trimmer who said he'd have a go at knocking up something similar for me. We are basically planning to have a pillow-type of slip over the back seats with vinyl running up the side wells and on the floor to protect the loadspace from dings and scratches and dirt. I'm using it for tools but I'm sure it would also be great if you're carting dogs, camping, fishing, etc.
Seeing he's going to use my car as a template he'll be in a position to mass produce more of them should anyone want them. So I'm just putting it out there at this stage - would anyone like to have one made up as well? No obligation at this stage, I only want to get a handle on how many might be needed which I can then pass on to the trimmer.
The colour choice will probably be black, noir, or ebony.;)
I've got no idea of price at this stage but it will most certainly be cheaper than the LR equivalent (I haven't got the price on these yet). My company despatches product all around Australia, so we'll be able to ship these by post or courier using our normal despatch channels anywhere in OZ.
If you're interested just reply or PM me and I'll start accumulating some numbers. I won't get a chance to get mine made up for about 2 weeks. When I do I'll post pictures (soon as I figure out how) and prices.
Regards,
Ron

I'm not sure how different the back of a D3 is from a D4 (I'd suspect not much). When I get mine made up I'll see if I can find somebody with a D3 to give it a try.

They will fit the D3, the rear section is identical.

Look up Bushranger 4Wd accessories. They are sold by most 4WD stores and I think the retail is $130+ I believe they have a D3 liner which will fit the D4.
I would be surprised if there are not others on the market as general accessories.

I too, would be interested, depending on price.
I am looking at just going down to Clark Rubber and buying a piece of decent thickness rubber and making it fit the floor space.
If your plan looks good and the price is right then I will gladly jump onboard...oh, depending on shipping to WA.
Cheers,
Norm

Hi Guys,
Another forum member has just emailed me a link to a UK firm that makes liners for D4's. They look pretty good:
Hatchbag - Bootliners - The Original Boot liner, Pet Mats, Odour Controller, boot liner, boot liners, car boot liners, bootliner (http://www.hatchbag.co.uk/product.php?xProd=1075)
He bought the one with all the bells and whistles and it came to 133 pounds including freight to Oz (about $231.00 AUS at the moment). I'll have a confab with the motor trimmer up the road and see what he'll come up with as a price. I'd like to model it on the ones in the above link with the splits for the fold down seats and also the sill guards.
Oh, by the way, the ones above also come in pink! Come on, I dare anyone...

Thanks Admiral,
I had a look at these and do they look good.
Bushranger - Wagon liner (http://www.bushranger.com.au/cgi-bin/part.pl'task=wagonliner)
The only problem is that they appear to be rubber tubs which only go up the sides about 1 or 2 cm. The crap I load in the back usually is bulky and bangs around the sides. I'm looking at a vinyl type of liner that will also protect the sides, the rear door panel and the back of the seats. I found with the Cruiser that I completely destroyed the rear of the seat and had to have them trimmed off again before I sold the car.

Hi Ron,
I bought the LR flexible load space protector, not long after I bought my D3. Yes - they are a rip-off, but there is not much from LR which isn't! IIRC, it was about $320. Anyhow, I'm really happy with it - when you lay all the seats down, it even protects up to the headrests on the front seats. The only thing I don't like about them, is the silly suction cups to hold the sides up - they don't work. I usually tuck them into the rear storage space when needed.
So - I can recommend them!
Cheers,
Rob

I actually removed several panels on my Patrol and replaced them with MDF covered with marine carpet. Kept it neat and professional looking, and I still had new parts to put back before we sold it. If you are going to do that sort of damage, maybe you need to look at something more permanent.

I have used the Hatchbag for a few years now and it really is a great product! We bought the charcoal dog mat for the back as well and it works better than advertised. After 3 years of throwing wet dogs in the back, it still doesnt smell (only washed a couple of times). So, if you have a furry friend who sits in the back it is certainly a good item to have.
Also, I have a D3 Land Rover Boot Liner for Sale in Melbourne if anyone is interested. It's just been collecting dust since I got the hatchbag, so make me an offer and come pick it up if you are interested...............It's the one with the sides that come up about 100mm...

Hi,
I have seen a Discovery 3 boot liners on eBay for $100+25p&p.
Off the topic a bit, can anyone help? At the moment if I want to read a topic, the latest post if first and the original post is last which means I have to go to the last page and read backwards. Does anyone know how I can have the original post at the top of the first page?

Thanks Furrydog, I'll have look.
With regard to posts this drove me nuts too originally. I've now got used to it and actually prefer it. If you do want to change there are some options on the Display Modes menu up at the right in the thread window. I'd reckon there'd be other ways but as I said I now prefer the way it is.

Damn. That is cheap.
But when I was deciding between these & the Bushranger product, the latter looked to be better quality for the approximately the same price. Now that it is 30% cheaper it is certainly work a gamble...
Anyways, I took delivery last week of a Bushranger wagon liner (Kingsley Part Number: 78R95 (for Disco 3 & 4). $135. Very happy with it's quality.
It's edge lip does only rise about 1.5 inches. Good enough for my needs.

I got one from the same seller for the D4 (but it is the same footprint as D3), but upgraded it to the Luxury PET Fabric as I wasn't aiming on needing to wipe it down much - just to stop stuff going into the cracks and also to make it easy to rinse off. It has a texture like carpet and fits well. It doesn't have any rubbery smell. This upgraded fabric version might not suit the people who want to carry muddy stuff around.
The quality of it is fantastic. I would highly recommend this one. It seems to be on special at the moment so is around $25 cheaper than what I paid for it.
Cheers,
Edwin.

Hi all,
I've copped out! I took several pictures of the Hatchbag and its accessories and my car down the road to the motor trimmer and asked if he could make something similar. He looked at the pictures, looked at the price and just shook his head - I've ordered a HatchBag from the UK.
I needed something that would protect the entire boot area even up to the window sills. I'll probably cut some ply or mdf as a base after the liner has been installed.

I got some coreflute board from a hardware supplier and bent it to fit. I attached it to the side with some vecro.
Dirt cheap and I just make another when it gets worn.

I installed a Hatchbag protector on the weekend. Overall I would say "not too bad for the price". My main gripe is that the the covers for the rear of the second row of seats are cut to suit when seats are in position. When the seats are folded down these covers are 200mm too short. It's a pretty thorough cover up job and if you normally have seats up it will satisfy. As I will never use the second row (let alone the third row of seats) an ideal protector would extend all the way to the rear of the front seats and extend up the backs of the front seats as weel as cover the rear doors.
Maybe I'll get the hatchbag modified or use it for a template for my ideal. ;)
