I have a strange hesitation accelerating off idle on my 1998 tdi automatic Discovery.

If I give it firm acceleration, there is no problem, other than the usual turbo lag. However, if I accelerate gently, it will accelerate, then stumble for a second (as if running out of fuel), and then accelerate again.

It goes beautifully at high speed on the highway.

I have had the auto recently serviced and the guy said ot was in great condition.

I was thinking the boost compensator pin might be stuck but would this cause the go, stop, go sensation?

Any other ideas please?

Update: the little pin in the boost compensator moves in and out fine.

Fuel lift pump? If its the type that has a screw on lid check that its not loose.

You could be sucking air.

I could tighten it about 3/8th of a turn so i will see how that goes. Cheers.

Hey buddy, i recently had the same trouble and i have nearly torn out every hair on my head trying to find the problem. i replaced the fuel lift pump because it had given up the ghost and on fitting it i noticed on the test drive a hesitation that was irregular and inconsistent. After much searching of pressure hoses and fuel lines and even the waste-gate, i decided to go back to basics and check the one thing i had overlooked, the stop solenoid. On inspection the wire connected to the solenoid was loose and in need of cleaning, now with a clean tight fitting there is no more hesitation and pulls hard all the way to 4000rpm.

i am not saying that this is your problem, but it might be worth checking ;)
