Hey all, my first post here, I shall head over to the readers rides in a bit and fill you in with what I own, but for now she's a 2003 Defender 90 Td5 County.

Oh and Im from the UK :) But you definately seem to provide some excellent advice on here from what I've seen, so I thought Id ask here as well :D

Here's my landy:

Ok bear with me, while I try to explain this the best I can.

She basically has different moods (no, i havent gone mad lol)

One day, she will fire up and sound a bit lumpy idling, and generally not feel as smooth driving, and sound harsh when revving it)

On another day, she will start up, idle smoothly, and drive lovely and smoothly, be eager and willing to rev smoothly right up to the rev limiter

Take today for example, started her up seemed fine, pulled off, cough, splutter, no power and a load of grey smoke. 2 secs later, all clearer up and she surged forward.

Another thing thats going on is occasionally she gets very very delayed throttle response.

I've been doing 50 behind something on a dual carriageway, pulled out to overtake.. foot down.. nothing... nothing... 5 secs later, surges forward with very impressive acceleration.

Now also add to this the problem I had over winter which is obviously related where on some cold morning she would fire up, then die, then fire up and cough and splutter, and smoke everywhere with no power until after several miles driving to warm it up.

Im fairly sure the answer lies within an engine sensor somewhere, but before I go about trying to hook it up to a diagnostic machine, anyone got any clue what the problem might be?

From my reading on this forum you should be looking for oil in the injector wiring harness, and possibly replacing it.

I'm guessing you have a TD5?

Check the basics
- Oil at ECU
- Oil in harness under engine cover
- Disconnected MAF sensor
- Failed MAF sensor

Do you have access to Nano/Rova Com etc? Any driver demand errors?

When all else fails... Ring the UK LR guru.. Pete Bell @ Bell Auto Services.

No oil showing in the ECU plugs, have tried running with the MAF disconnected and didnt seem to feel any different.

Dont know anyone near to me with a dignostic computer :(

I think I will give Pete a ring, been mentioned to me before, but unfortunately he's the wrong end of the country to me, but I may be heading north on holidays soon, so maybe I could work something out.

Thanks for mentioning that, I got her plugged in by the local independant not so long ago, and they said everything was fine, but I dont think they checked any live data, just looked for error codes.

I get the impression I need someone a little more special to take a look at her, so I'll give Pete a ring next week :)

earth fault and a noisy crank angle sensor.

the engine will run with a noisey crank angle sensor but if it gets near the "failed" side of noisey they run rough.

on checking the Crank Angle Sensor

This is also one of those faults that can turn up just on startup so with the engine running clear the faults with a nanocom (or similar) and take it for a drive if the fault shows again without a shutdown its definately the sensor or the wiring to it.

right, Im going to chuck something else in here which I believe may be linked..

a ticking noise.

Sometime loud, sometime quiet. Seems to be when the engine is running rougher than usual, I get quite a ticking noise when its cold, and even when warm on the overrun, you can hear a quiet but distinct ticking.

Today she was running nice and smooth, and there only a very slight "ticking" when cold, but goes pretty much as it warms up.

Also sometime when you rev it, as you lift off to change gear for example, as the revs drop, you hear a quite loud ticking, sometimes it does this, sometimes it doesnt.

Anyone know what this could be, related or not :(

Cheers

Adsey
