Hi All
My dad just bought two old Hillman Minx's that he is planning on restoring. He is even putting a diesel in one of them. I was just wondering if anyone on here owns or has ever owned a Hillman...

Hi, My Uncle had a Fully Restored Hillman Minx, not sure what happened to it when he died as there had been a family split and had not seen much of him even though he was not directly involved.
My Grandfather had a Hillman Hunter station wagon from brand new and drove it to work right up until he retired and for a while after, dont know what happend to that either but is one of my distinct memories as a kid.

Used to have in 1972 a Hunter with 20000 km. Was nice but not as good as the Cortina GT (have 3 of them  )

my daddy had a 1951 minx that was the joy of his life.... till he bought a 1964 humber vogue...
one of my earliest memories is walking in front of the hillman in a pea soup fog on the old road in to deep water bend, waving a torch so he could see where i was, as you couldnt see the road at all from in the vehicle... things we used to do to drown bait...
ps there is a rootes group station wagon down the road from me in nice condition that make a nice restorer...

My first car was a '54 Minx, the last of the side valves. My second car was a '51, same mechanicals, with the intention of changing the engine. I only ever got round to changing the number plate, singular Q665-418. :p
Inc, I trapped many a muddy at Deep Water Bend.

That brings back memories, this was my first car, same colour and everything, it was already old and beat up when I bought it from my mum but it was virtually bullet proof and was a fantastic car. I replaced it with an even more beat up but faster MarkII Cortina with a Weber Carby which was worth more than the car.

Back in 1987 my first car was a 1965 Hillman Minx. Being 18 it wasn't my favourite car but you just could not kill it. It went every where and was tough as. If you did not have the keys you could get in through the front quarter window and start it with a 5 cent piece, very handy.
One day I left it a the train station and came back and it was gone, rang dad to see if he took it and when we realised it was stolen we burst out laughing. The police found it at a shopping center 20kms away, a couple of VB's were left on the seat. Ahhh the memories.
Had it for 3 year until I save up for an LH SS Torana. Wish I still had that, worth a bit now.
PS: I like the model with the back window sloping back, look good done up.

Not a trend setter, a follower of fashion (of the time). :D

Aaaahh yes........... the Cortina GT's I bought my first in '65 a red MK1 GT, brilliant car, across Oz 5 times, replaced by a MK2 GT, not as good, then a
Capri GT, nt bad and then a Mk2 GT with the blacked out bonnet etc, all not as good as the MK1.
I was restoring a MK1 original some years ago, picked it up for $400 log books and all spent about 7 years off and on then decided what was the point, it will look good but drive like a '65 build vehicle and what can I really do with it so I sold it for $2000 and spent that on my '86RRC............

We had a mate who had a few acres up at Colo Heights and his dad put a dirt track in. We used to get old bombs and have our own demo derbys. One guy bought a 65 Hilman up and we all laughed. It outlasted all the other cars we had there and was indestructable. Bashed a crashed all the falcons, holdens valiants, toranas, and sigmas we bashed into it. Finally blew the clutch pulling a HR Holden out of the dam next to the track.
We put it out the back and sstarted the motor and put a brick on the gas pedal and left it screaming its head off until it went bang.
Left it for a while and it started again but blew a bit of smoke. I think it is still out the back with a few lizards living in it. What a car

Mum had a Minx for quite a few years when I was a kid in NZ. It was followed by a Hunter station wagon. Us kids used to get relegated to the wagon part when we went somewhere with another family.
My claim to fame in that car was causing mum's only ever speeding ticket. While sitting in the back, I pulled back the spring loaded rear seat latch, and let it go. Mum looks in the mirror to see what the hell the noise was just as we crested a hill. Unfortunately she also put her foot down a bit and when she looked around again was greeted by the local traffic cop with a radar gun
When I was first married we had a Super Minx that I bought off an old bloke that had owned it from new. It was unkillable. Filled it up many a time from roadside puddles when it boiled. First gear was a real stump puller.
The Hillman didn't do any favours for the old man's HQ though. Hillman was 4 speed column shift, and when I'd go back home and drive the 3 speed HQ it inevitably copped a few attempts to get into reverse.
I was in NZ on holiday back in March, and saw about 20 old Hillman/Humber/Singer cars on a club run. I never see them here.

Hi, the owner's manual was a wealth of information - it had all the jacking points and the dimensions for straightening the body and frame.
I think it had about 36 grease nipples in all in the suspension/steering.
It was amazing what we loaded the poor old thing up with, we had it for about 5 years and updated when expecting first child. Not that it was ever unreliable, it never left us stranded.
cheers

Loving these old pics :D
Here is my brother's 1959 Hillman Minx, got it back from the sand blasters today after we stripped it out completely. He only paid $250 for it, and it was already partially stripped out. There are about 20 rust holes to fix in the thing as well as a few dings, the poor girl has had a hard life.

He has 7 months before he gets his license, and will need to do a lot of work...I think dad will help him a lot :D
Good learning experience I think...but I think I'd stick to Landys for now

We didn't have a Hillman, but had its' "Rootes Group" cousin, 1963 Humber Vogue. Beautiful little beasty, White with the red interior - wooden dash and door inlays, went like a trooper (with a tiny donk), strong as, and stylish.
I'll see if I can find a pic.

My first car was a Hillman Imp - '64 model. Cost $300 bucks.
Put Pirellis, Lukey muffler and surfboard racks on it and thought it was Christmas.
Last seen yonks ago in a wreckers in Keith (SA) after a mate's sister got it rear-ended coming back from a pub.
