haha it was bloody cold today in Perth :D
Heck, my Subaru takes a few KMs to get up to temp and it's not diesel.

My 2010 D90 is about the same. I think the important thing is to take it easy until it is at normal operating temperature.

I get to work before the needle moves off the blue
So on the way home I give it a long-way-home drive to get some heat into it... Including a burst at 100km (highway to my house)

I suspect it all depends on where the temperature sensor (for the temp gauge) is in the 'cooling' system.

thats about what big red used to do, 8-10 K depending on the traffic to get warmed up...

well mine depends on how fast your going, it gets to op temp at about 100-110kph,,, other then that it cools back down to just above the blue,
or 4wding with lots aload and not much speed, then it starts to get to op temp,
realy must put in a new thermo stat:angel:

Our 90 takes about 8-9 kms to warm. By the time the wife gets from Morley to work in Osbourne Park she can use the heater. I have really felt sorry for her this week and let her use te Puma, heated seats and it warms up quicker.

Yep , about 7-8kms.
Can we fit a rad muff as per cold weather trucks to speed that up..

Nope... Because until it generates enough heat to open the thermostat the coolant is recirculating in the engine anyway.
Radiator only comes into play once the engine gets hot.
My drive to work is 3.7km... I should walk or ride a pushy but use the car a lot on plant.

Mine gets above blue after 3.5 km, and reach the optimal temp around 6. New Thermostat, off course. Before, never gets there until 10 km

Diesels do not waste a lot of heat, so in cold weather they take a long time to warm up.
A radiator muff would probably help, even though the radiator is not doing much until the thermostat opens, as it would reduce the cooling airflow over the engine.
With my Isuzu, I run a radiator muff in winter, and despite this plus a (fairly) new thermostat, the engine temperature still drops below normal in cold weather except when working hard.

I must say I've been wondering about this too, my TD5 Defender seems to take about 10k, my Dad's TD5 Disco takes maybe 4k.
Perhaps I should buy a new thermostat and see if that makes any difference?

Well, as I told you, there were a great difference between before and after fitting a new thermostat.I think the old one was already leaking internally, so as soon as the engine started, there were water circulating through the radiator, it doesn't let the engine warm up properly
