View Full Version : Fitting deadlocks on the doors

Door locks on the Defender are not noted for their resistance to the criminal classes. I've read somewhere that people have fitted deadlocks to their Defenders. Has anyone any experience of doing this? Can anyone recommend a suitable lock?

Firstly you'll have some difficulty finding deadlocks that are ADR approved.

After that if people see deadlocks, they'll think that you have something worth stealing and they'll simply go for the glass.

So before you go to the trouble, play it safe, keep everything of value out of sight. Next consider mesh security screens on the rear windows and doors as well as a cargo barrier, which is good for occupant protection in a crash as well as making relatively secure cage in the back for valuables. After that you could consider a deadlock on the rear door.

Addit: If you have a defender with glass held in by "key rubber" seals. Remove the glass and turn the seal around so that the "key" is on the inside of the vehicle. That way they can't pull out the key to remove the glass without the smashing sound. This was a particular problem in the days of the Series vehicles.

I looked into this for an overland vehicle, and there are a few variations of the same theme. Most are designed as back door locks for tradies vans to keep their tools a little safer.

I've seen these ones posted on a UK forum, still have to find a retailer. Though I would imagine that it wouldn't be so difficult to get a few of these cut out locally.

Regardless of the type of door hasp you use, they need to be used with a shutter lock, to prevent anyone getting a bolt cutters to the shank.

There's also a deadlock type thing, though I would imagine it would take quite a bit more cutting to install them.

At the end of the day though, if they want to get in, they will.

A few years ago, at KLR Automotive, I saw a Stage 1 Landy with Yale locks fitted.

Looking at this photo is seems that all you'll need is a phillips head screwdriver to undo that lock!

Thanks for the input guys. The Overland Hardware product does look substantial and I'll look into this. Still hoping for something that fits within the door of course.

As to the general comments, I appreciate that security is only as good as the weakest link and all the other aspects - immobilisers, window guards, etc. need to be set up to an equivalent level. :lock:

EdwardThe problem with the type in the pic, is that they won't comply with ADR in respect to protrusions from the alignment of the vehicle. A vehicle can be defected with them fitted and as suggested they don't look all that substantial, nor-tamper proof.

Brilliant work Mike_ie... i've been looking for that link for a couple years as have a similar issue and knew i'd read somewhere about using a mortice deadlock.

Is a great idea, they're thin and secure, won't be able to lock from inside so no issues i can see with adr and they're not an very visual security option so as to not invite uninvited interest in your vehicle :)

The other modification to the doors I would consider if concerned about security would be to attach to the hinge side of the door a suitable steel bracket that overlaps the door frame when the door closes, one at each hinge, could even be attached by the hinge bolts (but if so ensure they are nyloc nuts so they cannot be undone from outside). This makes it so you can't enter the vehicle by driving the hinge pin out or unbolting the hinges.

don't **** around with silly exposed "get the bolt croppers out boys" stuff
http://www.zonesecurity.com/pdf/3950_series.pdf
I have a set of four of these bad boys cost around 300 quid in the u,k, for them you just have an exposed 4 mm hole that is it I got them for a van I had and had some mounting plates made up for them I guess you could achieve the same on a Landy.
I didn't use them and I believe I have two sets matching of two, if you are interested give us a hoy and we can see what we can do, I dont need them as I have the lockable tub top

Should you go the external hasp idea go with a padlock such as this ...lose the key and it could ruin your day http://www.zonesecurity.com/pdf/1350_series.pdf

Why worry? Anyone with a cordless drill and a star fitting can undo the hinges in a couple of minutes can't they?
I haven't tried but I assume you could take the hinges off and open the door. If some breaks into my car, I hope they do this instead of a jemmy bar or smashing the window.
Hopefully the alarm will go off too!
