A request for 130 owners

Good afternoon Ladies And Gents!

Could you guys especially with a 130 around the same vintage as my own(1998) have quick squizz at your dumb irons (that is the sicky out bits that the bumper bar would sit on, to the front of the chassis -for those less mechanically minded) have you got a hole in each with a rubber bung blocking them off?
Just that every single Defender I have seen has the bung and the holes to fit them in ....mine don't, it just has an original looking plate of the metal variety- no holes

Rick toughen up princess...is a bit parky in perth tonight as it goes.
I don't think a bullbar would have any relation to weather the jacking points are present in the end of the dumb irons or not, as most landies come fitted with a standard bumper bar straight from the factory don't they? and they sit above the dumb irons....I am sure they are spossed to be jacking points...I could be wrong of course..Thanks Rick

Mine defintiely had bungs in the end of the jacking points which are, as you say, below the bull bar.

OK confession time, I didn't check today. Hell, I didn't even have lunch, I was so busy with work.

So, in fear of being labelled a princess again, I ventured forth into the great cold (it's only about 4* at the moment, it was only -3* this morning) and lay under the front of a 1998 Defender 130, and lo, the dumb irons were welded solid.
No rubber bung and jacking point.

I'm guessing this is as 130's use a bottle jack and not the other whatever it's called jack.
If you notice, the jacking points in the rear crossmember are plated too. ;)

And Rick I take it back you are a Prince amongst land rover owners ....well ok a bit much ..er you are a bloody good bloke !!!!
So that answers my question to a point, now I want a definative answer as to why that is the case and if I was to drill a hole in each one to be able to get a lance down the chassis rails, would that be detrimental to the structure IO feel not but would want an answer from LR.
One can only assume that the dumb irons are filled in because like Rick said you are suppossed to use the useless bottle jack on a 130...answers appreciated

there should be other holes you can get into further along the chassis.

Your obviously right Dave (of course!!) but the dumb irons are full of crap, and I have done the whole jet washer up the chassis rails before, as it hasn't been anywhere more exotic than perth thus far it would seem apparent that the debris is not coming out...got an airline to it the other day and that got a bit out.

My truck manufactured 7/97 is blanked off/no jack holes like yours. In fact on my truck the ones in the rear cross member have plugs welded in-not that you could have used that jack there anyway.

Parky means cold, and as I am a new Australian and have citizenship and it's how I speak yes it is Australian.
I may not speak in the exact same dialect as yourself but isn't that a good thing?

Do you see any issues with drilling the plated front of the dumb Irons (never to jack from) but to use as an access point for cleaning out the chassis rails at that end?

Mate, i can't see an issue with drilling a hole, as long as you get all the swarf out so it doesn't help rust the rails out as the swarf corrodes ;)
