Having a rear window fabricated out of marine aluminium to replace the rusted out original.

Photos of the original showing the state of rust damage

New window will be ready for a trial fitting next Wednesday and after any adjustments will be sent off for powder coating and then final fitting

Will post some more pictures next week of the new frame

Hi,

All welcome to flame away, but IME powdercoating is the most overrated finish for longevity, esp if you live near the sea.

If I went to the trouble of re-proing a RRC tailgate frame in ali it would be anodised ideally but that could / would be exxy. Next best IME would be etch primer followed by enamel. I have a fair bit of experience with this and would appreciate other comment.

No flaming from me ..... I would 2 pack paint it with a semi gloss

Don't have any technical knowledge of painting but the guys doing the window frame do and they do a lot of work for the ocean going Hi speed Ferries, aircraft frames and repairs, build their own fishing boats and so on so l am sure whatever they are doing they are doing it professionally and cost wise l expect it to be under a $1,000 as it is a once off first time article for them their is a bit of a learning curve for them and additional time in getting the job done on the positive side once done they said they can do other window frames if anyone else wants one done quicker as they have worked it out and done the jigs for this one.

After seeing that tail gate, I would hate to see the rest of the vehicle.

The rest of the vehicle is in good condition and rusty rear tail gate windows is common feature of classic range rovers

Are you sure.

Mine is a 21 year old vehicle and It's lived with me on the Gold Coast for the last 12 years, and the original upper tail gate is still near perfect.

I know it's still fine because I've had recent problems with the latches and had it apart less than 2 weeks ago.

Yours has Salt damage to be sure.

Yes they (Upper Tail Gate) are a known issue.
So are the floor pans, Bonnet hinges. Lower tail gate, Chassis, Bottom section of ALL pillars, below brake booster, bottom doors, sunroof, forward bonnet corners, rear body chassis.
