Cooling System 109 Stage 1 V8

Just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a diagram or Schematic of the COOLING system on a Stage ONE..

I have read on here and other 4wd forums, about Problems after installing a Edelbrock four barrel Manifold, and that water will not, circulate at all until the Thermostat opens? I have heard of some who say to drill 2 or 3 small holes in the thermostat? As I live in a cold area, I want the water NOT to flow through to quickly, I have only driven a few times, before the Intake replacement, and after removing, realised the reason for such cold running,NO THERMOSTAT at all.



What route does the water take from the pump?

Is both the out lets (on pump) flow lines? Both Pumping? OR returns?

There was a little hole in Manifold, that I opened up, and Bushed in a Brass thread, so water is plumbed into the Manifold, from one of the pipes on Water Pump, the other goes directly UNDER manifold and to Bottom of heater core?

The pipe from the rear of the INTAKE manifold plumbs to the top(inlet of the Heater?)

This should allow for the correct FLOW??

I had to remove a small amount of alloy, from the side of the thermastat housing, to allow the BUSH to be installed, could others have just covered this hole with the GASKET? I checked the original Intake, and I cannot see how it is any different, plumbing wise, unless it takes a different route inside the MANIFOLD... I have hooked it up the same.

I guess you are talking the heater loop. The one to the outside of the pump pushes and the one in the middle sucks. The heater is the cold start bypass circuit with no valve on a RRC.

The main problem with at least Stromberg inlets is that they are the highest part of the engine and get airlocks. On an RRC there is a bleed at the very top of the manifold back to the RH side tank of the radiator.

Yes it should flow OK as you have it. the early 3.5 had the heater outlet at the back of the manifold. But also put a bleed to the Radiator.

Actually i think that both the outlets on the back of the 3.5 pump are returns. One is for the heater and the other is for the manifold. This is so that when the heater is off there is still flow through the block and past the thermostat. If not, there'd be static water until the thermo opened (which it wouldn't as there be no coolent flow).

if you run LPG the second return is not needed - wont hurt having it - but it will result in more water flow through the rad without it.

Maybe that explains it then....

When the heater is not in operation, and if the HOLE in the Edelbrock manifold is covered (it would be in most situations, if the Thermo housing is not MODIFIED) there would be NO FLOW, until the thermostat opens...

So thats maybe what the Others were talking about....

So the pipe from the rear of the Intake, obviously doesn't allow any flow of water, until the tap is opened, the it allows it to flow throught the heater, then back, underneath the Manifold, to the water pump....

And the other, coming straight out of the manifold at the front, flows a small amount of water, back to the water pump, until such time as the thermostat opens, allowing the water through the radiator....

Guess, that might be it, so as i have it plumbed up, the water can still circulate, until such time as thermostat opens.....

Thanks heaps guys, just about to fire it up and as all Alloy, not wanting any BOILING or heating problems.....

Just the reading the posts, about drilling the thermostat etc.. didn't want to stuff it up, it only got a genuine 80k all log books etc.. from new...

And it doesn't run LPG, a 390 Holley I just fitted, Brand new, so all should be good.

Pacemakers, and a twin exhaust, should get along good enough for a old Stage One...
