Hi,
before I bought my D130, I had seen, and liked the idea of the spare wheel mounted under the LH side of the flat tray.
Some preliminary measurements to see where and what steel I need revealed that it might not fit.
I will have to cut a side step rail out of the way to do this, so I can't just slide the wheel into the hole to see if it does fit.
So, before I cut the tray, has anybody else got a wheel under the tray?
Any difficulties?
Any chance of a photo or two.?

Hi,
well I cut the step off and tried the wheel for fit under the tray,

and it doesn't.
The front mounting rail of the tray is in the way,

and stops the wheel going in far enough and also stops it from being able to slide forward a bit where it will fit nicely behind the rear of the cab.
No great drama, the tray has to come off any way for some other mods like a new heavier head board that fits the profile of the cab (I think it is off a triton) and I want to get some drawer runners and tanks squeezed in there as well.

I just bought a 130 Defender Ute, and despite being assured the spare would fit under the tray quickly decided it wouldn't.
I chucked the old steel tray and bought a new 8'6" Alloy Tray from AMI in Dan St. Springwood.
They do a neat head board mount for the spare and the tray is still large enough to be usable.

Hi,
now there is a puzzle, my tray is 2.4m, and there is very little room under the tray at the end. It is a single cab, not a dual cab, and I did calculate (http://www.myswag.org/gallery/d/8342-1/For-Web.jpg) that I could go to a maximum tray length of 3.2m before I was more than 60% of the wheel base length behind the rear axle. That would however be just too long for what I wanted.
I did consider headboard mounting two spare wheels, adding a little more length to the tray and sliding the camper back by a tyre width, but I am trying to avoid the problem of many camper laden utes that I have seen with heavy rear ends.
I got a second-hand tray as an interim measure originally, but it should be easy enough to modify (and cheaper) to suit my needs.
The tray sits on length wise beams, which are on top of and welded to cross beams that are bolted on to the ute's mounting points.
I have to modify the forward cross beam on the left side to get it out of the way of the tyre.

I have a 2.2 metre tray on my 130 dual cab, my spare misses underneath by 2" the tray maker reckons he will be able to make some alterations to get it under.
