View Full Version : PUMA fog light as a reversing light

The Puma 110 has a fog light at the rear on the right hand side.
It appears to be the same fitting as the reversing light but a red cover instead of white.

For the life of me I simply cannot see why I need a rear fog light so was thinking of getting a white cover (same as the reversing light) and paralleling it up with the existing reversing light.

Anyone done this?

Hi,
Yep, I found that when I put the tray on my D130 ute.
I have left the wire available for putting an extra bright and switchable light from the fog light wire, and dependent on the other reversing light on.
I will run it via a relay to keep the load off the existing wiring or may use similar to this

cheers

It should be fine but it may be wise to use a relay as the reverse light switch will have double the current going through it. It should be OK without a relay but it might pay to play it safe.

If you change both lights to LED types as ^^^^ then no relay would be required.

That's an excellent idea Scouse. Will do.

Don't, whilst this is a good idea in theory, I fitted the highest power LED I could buy to the reverse light and it reduced the output.

Gives more light output in and of itself, but makes poor use of the reflector, resulting in reduced total light output.

The only snag I can think of is that the rear fog is required by the ADR's....no rear fog therefore defected vehicle.

A supplementary reversing light is the way to go. Another thing to add to the list of things to add :)

I replaced the bulb with a reversing alarm type that lets the pedestrians know I'm backing out of the drive:

Reversing Alarm Bulb (http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/Reversing-Alarm-Bulb.html)

Not too loud but gets people's attention. Doesn't illuminate very well though.

- Frequency: 2.9kHz
- SPL @ 12V: 95 single, 90 pulse mA
- Pulse Rate @ 12V: 0.8 - 1.2 pulse/sec
- Size: 43.5(dia) x 34.5 (H)mm

Reversing alarms should be standard issue for trucks. ;)

Due to the hedge I can't see people on the footpath and I often encounter pram pushers who have been as thankful as I am that I have one. :)

It's a European standard .Here in Queensland it is illegal to use them anytime.Don't know about other states.

Yep so did I and it was good for bit then the buzzer started sounding weird, had a look and the buzzer unit had melted.:o

I fitted 2 small spots under the tow bar (about 2 inch of a Subaru I think ) and hooked them up to a relay on the standard SVX reverse light, its the bee's nuts.

Hi Miky,
Yes I did this with TD300 and TD5 to get more reverse light onto driver's side where it is of better use. Had auto elect disconnect fog light and cross-connect reverse light from L/H side as you say - never had any problems with reverse light contactor switch (where-ever it is?) overheating but then not usually in reverse for extended periods. Have used (2) reverse lights as temporary area light at rear for up to 30 mins doing track-side tyre repairs at night with no problem.

With the Puma, I had to buy the whole reverse light assembly as the lens was no longer removeable or available as a separate part.

Gday Allan,

When you get a chance I would hope you post up some pics of your bee's nuts! :D
I am interested.
I have a spotlight mounted up high at the rear passenger side (Landrover extra) but while it is great for camping, it is just ok as a reverse light.

No problems done. They give a great light when reversing. I fitted a work light on the roof rack to aid setting up camp in the dark.

Ok, I'll admit, I'm lazy :p

If I want more light I just turn the rear fog on. It might be red, but I can still see by it! :D

As mentioned before, you can't get just a new lens for the existing light, but given the extra work to do the wiring properly, you may as well just fit additional lights.

:)
