FL1 Would Not Start

I own a 2001 FL1, V6 and lately it has been going very well. Today however, we stopped for a short time to do some business and when we tried to start it it would not start. Motor kept turning over but would not fire, after many attempts to start we decided to take the plastic cover off the motor and check for spark, nothing, no spark at all. We then relocked the car and unlocked it again, trying to reset the computer but again nothing. Checked all fuses both in the engine bay and in the area in front of the driver, all fuses fine, all fuses pushed firmly into place.
Engine did not overheat, temperature guage was normal ( I know it can be misleading on a FL1), then suddenly after another try the engine fired up. It has been used for the rest of the day and has performed faultessly!!!
Only other things I can think of is engine was idling for about 5 minutes with heater on and then turned off and we tried to restart it about 2 minutes later!!!! Any ideas anybody?????:confused:

Not sure on the FL but Stacey's Pajero did the same thing recently, would run fine when cold but once it had been running for a while it would cut out and not start. Let it sit a while and away you go again.

In the end it wouldnt run for any longer than a few seconds. Turned out that at operating temp the contacts in the ignition module would fail and the spark would be no more, once it cooled down they would contact again and off you go.

I replaced the ignition module and no issues, It did it again some weeks later and this time i replaced the coil and its been fine ever since.

If you are not getting spark I would be looking at the ingition system, i dont know how it all works on the V6 FL but check the coil, the spark plug leads etc. It will be one or more of them. Matt

The V6 has a coil for each cylinder and the rear bank are under the inlet manifold.
It sounds like a Cam shaft position sensor. They will only stop the engine starting, once running if it faults the engine will continue to run.
You may need to get the fault codes checked as it should of logged a code

Spoke to the mechanic at work and he also mentioned it has more than one coil, said to bring it in to work and he will hook up to the onboard computer and see what error codes are there.Thanks for that Woko!!:)

Taking the FL1 to ALL FOURX4 today to have a new Cam Shaft Sensor fitted, problem of non starting has been slowly getting worse.;)

Hmmm - maybe after the issues you have had with this particular car is it time to move it on. Or are you happy most of the issues are now fixed?

You seem to have now had most of the major issues that the V6 FL1s had.

Garry Yeah, I see where you're coming from Garry, the car is well known at ALL FOURX4 and apparently the previous owner spent $10,000 on rebuilding the engine, it has been updated and on talking to the Workshop Manager, he reckons it should now go on for years. the mechanic who rebuilt it did all the mods so things like slipped liners should not happen and he has rebuilt 250 Landrover motors. The car runs extremely well, the wife loves it and we have thought long and hard about it and have decided to keep it. I have spent $5000+ on rebuilding the transmission, so what else can go wrong??;)( Don't ask).:cool:

With all the mods done you should have a good reliable vehicle. Just keep services up to it. and LR say drive line is service for life. don't believe it oil is cheap. Another this to change thermostat and pipes joining it regularity 40/50k km as these are plastic and are a very weak link.

FL1 fixed and running like a new car again!!:) Love that Rover V6 distinctive growl!!!:D
