View Full Version : LED trailer indicator lights pulsing

Hi Forumites,
I fitted LED lights to my camper trailer, all the lights work except the indicator laps flash / pulse as soon as I connect the trailer plug to the vehicle. I see people mention repeater flashers to make the lights work properly, also people talk about diodes and or shunts, where do you fit these the trailer or the vehicle, and where do you fit them, in the wire?
If this all becomes to hard I'll just put the old "normal" lights back on again, is this an easy fix?
Any constructive comments welcome.

they generally wind up wired up on the trailer. I personally would wire up a dummy harness like a pin converter that you get when you hire a trailer and keep that in the car just incase you wind up using someone elses trailer with led lights who doesnt have a car with the fancy electronics as a tow motor.

Hi Nomad9,
You will need to fit a pulse shunt - I have one of these:

looking at it thats the same thing I've fitted for a couple of blokes in the past.

if you get that buy some decent plastic cased rare earth magnets and glue them to the back of the case so you can keep it portable.

Hi Guys,
Yeap, when I saw the email address on the bottom when I read the ad for the second time I sent an email off to David (Owl), I'll just wait to hear back from him now. Forum to the recue again. I was just about ready to take them off and fit the old ones back. A guy told me many years ago "that for every accessory you fit you need three more to make it (what ever "it" is) work", how true that was, the second accessory was the brackets I had to make to hold the lights in position on the trailer..........!

Hi Sniegy or Owl,
Still can't seem to make contact with someone who can sell me one of these leads any other ideas? A phone number of someone via a PM, something like that maybe.

Nomad,

I just bought one of these (www.linearelectronicdesign.com) a week or so ago and fitted it myself, piece of proverbial.

I know its only an email address again, but David Vinycomb is the bloke who runs it and he was back to me same day. I highly recommend his product and he sends them out overnight once payment (Direct deposit only) clears.

Hi Guys,

I have to endorse Normthe1's post. I too bought a shunt last week from david at Linear Electronic Design. I transferred the dosh at 4:00 pm and I had the shunt in my hands, in Sydney at 1130am the next day. Talk about prompt service.

I haven't used it yet as I don't get my new van for a few weeks but it looks OK.

Cheers

George

Hi George,
Unfortunately I haven't heard anything yet, I'm sure there will be a genuine reason maybe he's on holiday or something. I'll send another email maybe this time. Could one of you PM me to tell me how much I'm looking at here, initially that's all I'm trying to find out. As soon as I manage to get hold of David I'll buy one.

I got the one that taps into the vehicle wiring rather than the one that goes on the trailer and it was $245. From memory, they were all about the same price however I do recall seeing another thread with instructions on how to make one yourself if you were handy with electronics for much cheaper buying the parts from Jaycar. Unfortunately, I am no good at electrickety so just bought the bullet and paid the cash...

Hi Nomad9,
I'm sure if David was around he would have responded. He was extremely quick when I was buying. If you are in a hurry, Sniegy has left his contact details above - email him.

Hi Pete,
All sorted, David got hold of me today via email, my email had gone into the dodgy box so he missed the email. Sorting out the purchase tomorrow, thanks for the help and offer to get me one urgently.

So does this pulsing/rapid flashing phenomena only happen if you have LED trailer indicators?
Or does it happen if you have std indicator bulbs but have LED brake/parking lights?

sniegy
30th June 2010, 07:06 PM
DG,
Indicator circuit only, as this is where the pulse is sent for bulb checks.

Cheers.

Hi Ducks guts,
Sniegy is spot on, all the other lights worked a treat, the pulsing only came through the indicators, this happened as son as I connected the light cable, and didn't stop util I disconnected the cable. I now have the magic lead from Linear Electronic Design and everything works a treat. Great forum this!!!

Strange.
I just tested my c/van that has full LED lights by hooking up to the D4.
No pulsing of the LED indicators. Everything operated as it should.
How lucky am I!:D
