Hi All,

Pretty late in the piece to be asking this question.....since I've already been off-road several times....

,,,,But what's the go with your car insurance?

When I insured my D4 the company never mention off-road work at all.....and I'd clean forgotten about it.

I've been off-road a few times now and intend to keep doing so. My D4 not being exactly cheap, I want to see where I stand.

Regards,

Kev.

it appears all companies have their own ideas on this,,
some are "everywhere" some are gazzeted roads only,

see the sticky "D2 Insurance"

contact your insurer and ask,, its the only way to be sure--

Unfortunately most do not know what their own term "Off road" means.
One company told me gazetted roads - so I said the eastern beach of Fraser would be OK - Oh no that is beach - not covered - but it is gazetted - oh was their response.

So when driving on a dirt track into a friends house on their property would not be covered as it is not gazetted - response oh yes that is is OK.

So you need to challenge the company with scenarios to ensure they know what is being offerred as they often do not know their own policies and are more interested in just signing you up.

Get it in writing.

I'd go to a 4WD Insurance broker. They will insure you for anywhere as long as the vehicle is roadworthy.

I use DGA Insurance, and there is also TCIS.

I'm with Justcar (or maybe Budget Direct... cant remember!), they said it didn't matter where I was, provided I was legally allowed to be there. Middle of a paddock or up the beach didn't matter.

I'm with Allianz. The car is insured anywhere on a gazetted road (which includes beaches) and defined tracks. It is not ensured for comps of any kind.

I had them clarify this in writing to me at the time of insuring the car.

BUT I have not had a claim yet so its not tested.

I'm with Suncorp. Rolled my Deefer (thus its name) they fixed it. Mostly.

I'm with APIA and my policey states anywhere in Australia, But I think I will make a phone call and confirm that to be on the safe side.

On a slightly differant note I just recieved my renewal and noticed my agreed value was $2000.00 less than my last years policy so I rang them. The response was this is done by the computer and the market value of your vehicle is $xxx.00.

It ended up costing me 22 cents a month to put the agreed value back up to where is was when I first got the policey. Something to watch out for!

UPDATE

Just made the call and they tell me the Disco is covered anywhere, off rd, in a paddock,on a beach etc. and they are going to confirm this in writing.

The cost for this is $43.72 per month with an agreed value of $22,000.00 for my 2002 Discovery TD5 (rating one good driving history, no one under 25, have to be over 50yo and you or your partner not working full time. For a while I wasn't working full time but have recently returned to full time work but thats was ok as my partner was only working part time.Might be worth checking out if you meet the requirements.
