The (series of unmentionable words) Bligh has now decided not to renew sand mining leases on Stradbroke Island (the main and pretty much only source of income for the place).
And worse, even against the wishes of residents, she has decided that 80% of the island will become National Park !!!

Used to take the dogs camping there as they could run free on the beach,
Guess that won't be happening any more.
it's OK though - apparently everyone will survive on "eco tourism" instead.

So how much do they have to increase tourism to make up for the sand mining 200 or 300 % and build accomodation what will destroy the island first sand mining or the increase in visitors :(

Do these people really think things through, or do they run with the idea that this will make them look good for 5 minutes so they can win the next election!!!

I was a DSS Field Officer in the Region that covered the Moreton Bay Islands. I was of the opinion that the main income of the island community was welfare payments. Don't ask me about the inner islands, Russell, Macleay, etc. I still get cranky about these places and the feral people they attract.

Hold that thought..................I thought I heard the timetable was 20 years hence or some such? Typical politician promise......she'll be long gone by then so this announcement means nothing at all.

the miners have been battling for years to get more leases without luck
i don't know the history but the re-vegitation being done now is world class and they are returning the damage done in the 70 back to original.....well near enough

Now you should listen to the WHOLE story.
Her statement was they will not be accepting any more applications from tomorrow and that existing leases would expire by what ever the date was.
Then at the end of the news item, the mining company exec said that they had been in negotiations with the government for some time to get their latest applications through, that would extend their current leases to 2037.
Now she hasn’t lied, she said no new ones she just forgot to mention that the current ones are likely to be extended to 2037.

It's the NP thing - and the whole mentality around that - which annoys the heck out of me.

Yes buit whatever way you vote you still get pollies.

They wouldn't be any different other than every state would have the same one so you would only need one license to travel the whole country and one set of rules, and we would have an extra 20 billion a year to spend. Pat
