New to this site and Land rovers.

Once my current 4x4 sells

I'll be looking at buying a defender 110 my budget will be about 25 grand so around the 20's would be good leaving me some coin to put a few things on it (wheels and muddies first up).

I have pm'd a few members on this site who have been very helpful so a big thanks to them.

I have spent hours searching on here and found some really good info which has made my mind up to get a 110.
Anyway I'd like a TD5 and there really isn't a lot to pick from at present.

Basically there is 2 both pretty close to stock. One with 124000k's for 21 grand reasonable service history and appears to be in good nick.

The other is only 20 mins from me and has 300000ks one owner with full service history for $15,500 and also appears to be in good nick.(i think he is a member of this forum)

I haven't checked either out in person as i dont want to waste there time.

Whilst both of these maybe gone by the time i have the cash to spend. I would like to hear peoples opinions/advice on buying a used defender 110.

My requirements are to be a daily driver for me and our long distance hwy runner (with wife and 4 year old daughter) and of course camping and mild off road work but no long off road treks at this point. And tow my race car.

Personally don't close your eyes to the 200tDi, 300tDi or even the Isuzu. Have a good look around and get the best example going at the time.

^what he said^ just find one with low kms in good nick that suits your price range not to much to ask for is it.they are out there just look everywhere

Don't forget to budget a few hundred $$$ for a crossbar for your young uns safety belt.
Good luck with the shopping. Personally if I was selling one & a prospective buyer asked to check it out & were honest enough to say they would like to "just look" at mine I would be quite happy to show it off.
I think most Deefer owners are proud of thier vehicles.
Its the tyrekickers who consider it a hobby to cruise around & test drive every vehicle that was ever made that annoy me.

Be vigilant. You never know what will pop up. I found my 2000 TD5 Defender in the shopping centre car park with a for sale sign on the back window. I picked it up for $16500 and before the owner did any real advertising.

The owner later admitted that if had advertised it he could have easily put another 10 grand on it and gotten it and I agree, it was in immaculate condition.

Only that Toyota and Nissan owners don't try and steal it off you:D

Waterpump bolts,which there are posts on the forum regarding
And oil in the wiring loom.
The rest is just regular Land Rover

Do a search (here) for the oil pump bolt issue on TD5's. Early ones were more prone, even though it seems rare overall. Oil in the loom seems to be the main one that crops up again and again, then the fuel regulator at the rear of the engine.

If you look at any and they seem to be dripping stuff at the back of the engine - it is probably diesel and means you'll need a new fuel reg. Not too expensive, but around $300 from memory.

Hi I'm not best at computer not sure where to post this quick heads up anyone who drives on beach. I have a 2010/11 Defender 90 has not done extensive beach work just typical stuff for SEQ Fraser, Moreton etc etc. Just watch where the power steering lines between bolt to chassis crossmember it flush plastic couling and salt and sand can be easily trapped and missed during cleaning the underbody. My lines corroded and was leaking power steering fluid and I recently replaced them myself with geniune rather than getting aftermarket hoses made.My mate helped me as I took it down to a mechanic and they couldn't quote me so I was scared it would be a stitch up the parts took a couple of weeks I gave them the wrong vin and they sent left hand drive ones but lucky sorted it out and the new ones fitted easily just removed the covers and a hose or two from the cooling system to get access to the top of the box, the pump and res are pretty easy to access cheers
