Ripping DVDs

I have about 100 DVDs that would be nice to get converted to compressed video files that I can place either on my TV Hard Drive or one I have attached to my Blu Ray Player.

I need to rip them to AVI, DiVx, MPEG, MKV or WMV type formats.

I have googled "freeware/sharware" but have only come up with trial versions or buy software to do this.

Anyone know of any DVD ripping software that it genuinely free?

As usual though, you can only use it for 30 days as a free trial, then you have to pay.

Not genuinely free, but still good for a while if you have a batch to do.

woul you be better copying them in thier original format to a portable hard drive , i have found the ones that have been ripped lose some quality

They will not play in DVD format from a HDD on my Blue Ray Player or when plugged into my TV or loaded on the TV HDD. The individual VOB files will play but the controlling ISO file in not recognised so you do not get to watch a full movie.

Thanks to everyone for the links - tried one and works well - just a slow process.

DVD fab is the way to go. it can do a direct no compression copy or compress a 4.7gb dvd down to about 700MB with reasonable quality (good for use on laptops out in the field or small screen portables (most of mine play back well on a 14 inch screen)

There is no 'controlling ISO file' on a DVD. If you rip a DVD, it saves the files as individual VOB files. I've been using DVD Shrink to do this for years, takes 5-10mins depending on the size of the disk, with no compression. It also allows you to select the main feature, multiple soundtracks etc etc.

If I want to transcode to MP4 etc, I use Handbrake, works for Windows & Linux.

I use handbrake 0.9.5 on Ubuntu 9.10.
ripped 50 or so DVDs onto the ipod.
like most things takes a bit of patience but then its works a treat

I concur, Handbrake is a great little package, pretty simple to use as well.
