View Full Version : Blue Screen of Death While Reversing

This morning while backing my D4 HSE into a car parking space at work the reversing camera gave up the ghost and I got a blue screen of death (just like I'm used to in Windows!). In fact I had a quiet chuckle because I remember a few years ago an auto industry exec responding to Bill Gates with a comment that if cars were as reliable as Windows you'd have to stop on the freeway every 15 minutes and restart them. :p

It's actually a bit disconcerting not having the reversing camera because you don't realise how boxy the back of a D4 is until you have to reverse it blind!

It seemed to only be the rear camera. When I switched to surround camera mode all cameras except the rear were working. The rear camera panel on the screen however was still blue.

Because it is an underground car park with lots of randomly placed roof supports and can be a bit tricky to navigate I decided to"reboot" the system by turning the engine off and then on again (is this a "one finger salute" instead of a "three finger salute" with computers?:p). After "rebooting" everything was fine.

I'm not particularly worried or phased by this (probably because I work with computers all day that need rebooting often). But I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Regards, Ron

There's been a couple of camera issues caused by kinks/tight bends in the cable. I can't say for sure if that's the cause of your problem though but mention it to the dealer on your next visit.

Sounds like loss of video signal, a bit like the TV when the AV source is switched off or unplugged.

Hi Ron,
As Scott has said there is a TSB(cant remember the number off the top of my head) that must be read/followed before condeming any camera on 10MY vehicles.
When installed the loop of the lead must conform a particular radius & not be marked in any particular way.
Also another reason the camera's go blue is they dont like being dirty!
A good wipe every now & then & hopefully all should be good.

Cheers

Thanks Pete,

It's only happened the once. If it occurs again I'll raise it with the dealer when I take the vehicle in for a service.

The car had been washed a couple of days earlier so I'm pretty confident that it was and still is relatively clean. I'll have a good look around it and give it a clean anyway.

I think Marie Antionette summed it up best... "let them eat cake". :D

Seriously though, if we relied soley on cameras then we'd be a sorry lot. But seeing they come as standard in newer vehicles they are there to be used and you do tend, after a while, to work with them as an aid. Therefore, when they go down it's a pain in the... well, you know.

I suppose now you're going to have a go about the heated steering wheel...:p
