How about something like this (http://www.getprice.com.au/Sigma-APO-150-500mm-F5-6-3-DG-OS-HSM-Ultra-Telephoto-Lens-Nikon-Gpnc_16--41329855.htm)?

Not bad.
I would have thought Arthur would appreciate something more like this:
If its length you want (http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/zoomsMF/12001700mm.htm)
Seriously though, Arthur to get the best results you'd be looking at a decent prime. 400 F2.8/500 F4/600 F4.
Personally, 400 F2.8 with extenders offers the best versatility. You could get away with a 300 F2.8 + ext.
Its all about the "money pit"

Yes I agree, the 500 f/4 is razor sharp in all settings but $10000 + it is a bit expensive for me now.
I guess that a 300 primer with estenders will have to do in the future and gt a little boat with electric motor to get closer. :)

I have a Nikkor 300mm here that when put on a DX Camera becomes 450mm... Which is pretty good. Very sharp lens.

The Nikon 300mm f/4 it is the one that I am chasing to use with a 1.4 converter.
The crop factor it is equal to a 450mm but not the reach.
