My Disco 4 is a Jan 10 build and have found the factory GPS maps to be hopeless outside the city( Brisbane) eg the Mt Lindesay Hwy thru Beaudesert and Rathdowney was basically the only road named and with no roads from eg Rathdowney to Boonah!!
This post is for the SE QLD chaps predom!!
I rang the dealer (Bruce Lynton at Gold Coast) to be told that I would have to pay $500 for the latest hard drive upgrade from LR. They could not tell me if it would be any better than what I have got, as they cannot preview it!
Does anyone else have a similar problem? Or have I a problem with my harddrive or with out of date software or what?

My D4 is a Feb 10 build and the minor road detail is hopeless. On a recent trip from Canberra back to Brisbane via some back roads, the GPS had no idea which road I was on. I have invested in a secondary unit running Oziexplorer and Hema maps.

I also have been disappointed.
Sat nav in D4 built Feb '10, delivered late May '10.

Offroad I use a Tomtom running a free programme called TTMaps, that allows use of Hemas digital maps. Just like a Hema Navigator but way cheaper! :D

I am looking for a GPS unit that will run Ozi as well as the standard nav maps. Not necessarily interested in Hema maps though.
What is the cheapest option?

I had a garmin M4 but the internal battery is fied I think. When it closed down it loses the ozi program.
Looking to replace but I don't need the PDA function.
Which ones can be hacked to run ozi CE?

Here you go!
OZtopo - Topographical Maps for Garmin GPS units (http://www.oztopo.com.au/index.htm)
Supported Units (http://www.oztopo.com.au/gps_units.htm)
I have a 1490T with a couple of different maps.

CaverD3,

Check out this thread in the GPS section of the forum.

Basically one of the forum members (Ranga) has been assisting people set these $100 units up very nicely. Can also run a reversing camera / bluetooth etc, from the feed back on that thread alone it would appear to be $100 bucks well spent, or at least not a bad option to dropping somewhere north of $500 on a similar unit.

George.

Can you hack or modify the original LR system?

Ditto. I have the D4 system as well as a Magellan Triton. Use the triton for interface to PC but the screen is **** in the sunlight. The LR one has a great screen and the maps are OK but no PC interface :(

I agree that when driving around the maps lack detail, with regards to road names etc. But it is suprising the info it has stored in it if you input a destination and navigate to it. I think it knows the street names you are driving past but doesn't think you care so it's not showing them. I've input some fairly obscure places and it has them stored in its data base, but as a road map it's crap, I guess it's there to help you find "A" destination. To date I haven't used it as anything other than a distraction, I like the compass function..

I use a Garmin 1490T with the OzNZ Topo Maps.

However with the D4 Nav I have found that if you zoom out to far the minor roads don't show. Try zooming in a bit.

The Topo Maps on the garmin do show more tracks but it is a set of off road maps.

I was at the dealer today and gave consideration to updating my sat nav to the lastest version. My vehicle is a MY11. The price was $445.00. I declined the update.

I see another post where the question was asked has anybody updated. At that price the update would want to steer the car as well!

However if the update actually provided a benefit i may consider it.

So I will renew the query: does anybody have any experience with the latest update?

Got the new maps loaded, they seem a lot better in the city. Havent had a go down south yet. I'm sure it will be good though.

The cost was $275 from 'Where is' to get the map update and $50 to load it in the car from LR.

Did you purchase the CD or the SD card? The site only lists updates for the D3, not D4, and that is only Version16 (the latest should be Version17). Which one did you buy?

Cheers,

Gordon

Not sure mate, Southerns did it all.

But, I remember Joe said they only get a code from the website, and then plug there computer into the car to upload the maps. LR has the map in the computer, but apparently can't upload it without a new code/pin.

This code/pin is measured against your VIN number.

Its certainly the latest version that came out in April, I'm 100% sure of this as he showed me the details on the computer/ whereis website.

I haven't done it myself, but I need to soon as my D4 is MY10. I was told you go to the site and pay, this enables LR to download/upload onto your car. I assumed a pin or registered number would be involved.

No discs or any other hardwear...a bit like purchasing an app from Apple and having to go to the store to instal it I suppose.

I just got my car so i would assume as it is a 06/11 build it will have the latest map installed. Doers any one know how to check what version you have installed?
