Hi All,
Just after some information on Defender TD5 110/130 fuel economy.
What size are the standard fuel tanks and how many k's (town and freeway) could i expect to get out of the above models??
Please let me know if there's a thread on this subject already!
Thanks for that,
Jimmy.

Hi Jim
No doubt there is but anyway my 02 Defender has a factory 75 (usable) litre tank and I am currently getting 9.0 l/100kms.
Running 235 85 R 16 General Grabbers and have the following fitted;
Bar and winch , drawer set and 2 long range tanks just to give an ide of extra weight on board.
Snorkel fitted and no roof racks fitted.
The daily drive is a mix of stop/start and Freeway , about 50/50.
Range is therefore 700 kms safe

10K/l is reasonably achievable, 75l tank work on 600K between refuels.

Thanks for the info fellas,

I had the one owner of a 110 i'm interested in buying tell me he only gets 12-13l per hundred and only 350km from a tank.
The wagon is basically stock standard (no extra accessories on it) could there be some engine issues going on there?
Thanks again,
Jimmy.

I get about 650Km per tank combined driving in a 300Tdi.
I can't seem to get much better than that.

On daily use unloaded (50%freeway ~90km/hr:50% stopstart) I consistently get 10.2 - 10.6 L/100km.
Driver only, rhino roof bars, steel rims, Maxis 753 tyres (~56psi) 235/85/16, egr removed, ~21psi boost.
I found that when filling up the fuel tank can still take another 3 - 7 litres after it has clicked off. So if I am calculating efficiency I will trickle fuel in until I can see the fuel and top up until level stays the same (patience is needed here). Sometimes there can be an airpocket which can throw out efficiency calcs.
I have never achieved 9 L/100km. Best was 10.0 L/100km

That only works out to 45 l per tank. He might be very heavy footed but even this sounds excessive.
My 98 TDi wagon gets around 800 km from an 80 l tank, or down to 500 if I'm towing my big trailer (approx 1200kg). I once got better than 10 towing a box trailer with a suspect wheel bearing so had to keep speed below 90.
Coincidentally, my TD5 Disco goes the same distances from 95 litres, but it is auto and I go a little bit quicker.

Hi, I have a 02 defender td5 and around town with a lot of short runs so the engine doesnt get warmed (till the weekend) I get about 11.5-12/100k's but I also have 255/85 r16's maxi bighorns and the front suspension is a bit saggy(bullbar + orig suspension) so both will make more drag/ drain on fuel efficiency for my car.

most of my driving is town driving.. stop start etc..
i have a LR tank, 127L, i fill up around the 1000 - 1100k's distance and for around 1000k's i'll fill up to around 103-105l. I dont drive carefully, its chipped and has roof bars.
Towing a 1.5t+boat at 3.5m high (like towing a brick wall) for 300 of the k's out of a tank reduces my economy by about 100k's per tank.
On a longer hilly run after first chipping and towing same boat loaded, plus car loaded it returned around 14l/100k's and i was holding 100kph up the hills so i wasnt being kind.
Not had the pleasure of a real long run yet... but i'd expect just creeping under the 10l/100k's

Thanks for the info fellas,
i've got a feeling the bloke wasn't totally sure of what he was talking about when he was giving me those figures, he was umming and ahhing like he'd never really given it much thought before, the Long Range tank sounds like an awesome idea i'd be filling up once a month when the price of diesel comes down!

My speedo is always about 10% over, even with the standard 7.50R16 wheels but I've checked my odometer over those 5km checks and its 200m out, so 4% over. Last time I checked mileage (including a weekend in the mud) I calculated around 9.2L/100km but that was based on deducting 10% from my mileage, not 4%, so if you're sensible on the peddle, 10L/ 100km should (Should I say) be easily achievable. Wanna b a boy racer, and you're probably looking at 12-13l/100km. oh my figures based on a 300Tdi, not Td5.

Never even remotely gotten close to 9l per 100kms. Even when it was empty. Best I reckon I have done is about 12, but more average of 13-15. Can not say I am over enthused about the TD5 economy. The tdi Discovery used to do 9s easy.

Best I've got from a td5 is 9.15 L/100km. Light load, mix of highway, back roads and a spot of 4x4. The route helped, going up was slower. Round town gets 11s.

my very best effort was 1000K from the factory tank. BUT I was doing everything right, night drive, empty, 80kph (following a crane for work) aircon off, windows up vent flaps open dead flat ground no wind, yada yada yada. and it was well past the E on the tank and the fill me you idiot light had been on for over an hour when we finally rolled into an open servo.

Average 10.5L per 100K's best I ever got out of the standard tank when I had it was 700K's by which time I was doing 80k's coasting down hills and praying.

I can get under 10L but need to keep the speed below 100K's on a good run.

Oh I've taken all the polution crap off, cat off, center muffler off, crank case hose out of the air intake. Since doing all this in Sydney trafic I average 10.5; 50 weeks of the year.

When I was maintaining my logs I was getting a consistant 11.5litres per 100km.
Thats with a 130 converted to auto and lots of things to add to it's weight. I did find that the loaded or empty the differeance was neglible.

Has anyone tested the difference with Fender TD5 economy after fitting Disco transfer case high range gears. I thought it should be better up to a certain speed? ( around 100 kph perhaps)

i do alot of town driving and a fair bit of highway, and to go get home from my work, its a 1km steep hill at 60kph. so that kills econamy, but if i try,, i can easy to 10/100, but at the moment, im geting 11-12, iv started to try and been a real eco driver,, only do 100kph, slow down using gears, all that stuff;), hardly gets to/over 3k befor a gear change,

 im running 32" mtrs,

9 to 9.5l/100 km running around. slightly higher on a trip.
If doing more K's would look at the disco transfer case as an option.

I can basically never get better than about 11.8l/100 and generally run at 12.5l/100. Worst ever was at Coffs a few months back where I got 18.5l/100 average over 3 days!

I have an 06 td5 110.
Has all the extras - roof, bull, winch, batt, l/r tank, fridge, ext protection etc. I used to get average ~12l/100km. When the warranty ran out, I chipped the cpu, blanked EGR, redline air cleaner, and replaced the exhaust from the turbo back with a 3" straight through system. Now I can get ~9.4l/100km..... The 127L tank gets me 1000km with usually ~20L remaining. This is if I plod around 100km/h. I went across the nullabor recently and went up to 120 and had to fill up at 700km. Much more fun to drive though. I have to fit the bigger intercooler next and this should help even more.

granno, pardon the ignorance but what do you mean by "blanked the EGR"? How much does the chipped cpu cost? I' ve got a 300TDi so hey, I don't even know if its got a cpu!
9.4 out of a TD5 is great. Just checked my mileage again the other day from 40km Sydney and a roundabout route to Port Macquarie and averaged just a bit better than 9.5l/100km pusing the old girl as hard as I could continuously; so that's about 120kmh on the speedo being an actual speed of about 100 - 105kmh ( I reckon). One of those work zone speed traps said I was doing 52kmh when the speedo said 60kmh so its always a bit of a guesstimate. :)
cheers gerald
ps oh yeah, had the cheese cutter tyres on (7.50R16's) pumped up to 45 psi

Hi coolbigrock, not sure about the sulfur content but I understand it to be reasonably high and it you want to get low sulfur its costs extra (but that's just from a workmates advice). Same bloke told me the low sulfur diesel is generally better for the injectors, etc. Anyone got advice to the contrary?
cheers Gerald

Our ninty gets around 10ltrs/100 around town and at times I drive it like its stolen. The egr is missing in action, AT tyres, bar winch ect. On a run at 110-120 economy is about the same loaded. What I love about the TD5, it doesn't seem to care what you do or how you treat it economy suffers little.

Hi Pirasea, later model 300Tdi's and all from then on have EGR (Exhaust Gas Reticulation) and Cat converters. Quickest power upgrade is to blank the EGR valve on the manifold. Much better fuel economy with much less "foot" for the to get your power. Those same 300Tdi's have ECU chips to manage the EGR but not the fuel pump (to my knowledge), so they can't be "chipped" like Td5's and Pumas to give better power and fuel consumtion. Exhaust conversions seem to have possitive effects as well.

My Puma 90 gets around 9.2l/100km combined on road and just on 10 off road.

Cheers!

yep,, i can second that, prity much the only time my eco gose out the roof is on the very soft sand, but on the road, no mater how i drive it still gets about the same,

last yr fraser trip, 90L fuel, 770km, in happy with that for beach driving
