View Full Version : Puma keeps running with key out !!

Had an unusual experience yesterday. Pulled up out in the bush for lunch, turned off and removed key and realised engine still running. Tried various key on/off methods to no avail, engine kept running though cabin fan was turning on/off with key. Ended up leaving idling with key in while had lunch and about 30mins after originally trying to turn off the engine it stopped of its own accord.

Started up and turned off normally with key several times and then headed for town. Has started and stopped today normally while visiting local auto elect and diesel workshop for enlightenment. (Dealer 1600kms away)

Local thinking is;
(i) faulty contact at ignition barrel? (faulty lock barrel replaced 6 wks ago)
(ii) faulty relay between ignition and ECU?
(iii) faulty fuel pump solenoid?

Waiting on a response from Land Rover Technical at the moment but was wondering whether anyone has encountered this?

Hi Keith.
I was told not long ago by the stealer in Perth that LRA had entered into a "liason" with those that used to sell/service Landies in Karratha, Broome (I think) and Port Hedland so maybe your problem can be fixed up there not 1600 kays away.
Of course that could have been bullcrap from the salesman and I'll be interested to know if this is true and you can get some help there as I'm thinking maybe Puma late in the year.
Sorry I couldn't help otherwise.
Alan.

Hi Keith.
I just phoned the stealer and the only people doing Landie service at this stage appear to be in Broome. Apparently I was the second person today making the same inquiry.
I spoke to a salesman named Rex who has been with Barbagallo for many years and he's going to make further inquiries and get back to me tomorrow.
This is the very reason I went to the darkside!
Hope things get better.
Alan.

Hi,
guessing here - I've no idea on diesels, but is a solenoid fuel line valve used to shut off the fuel when the 'ignition' is turned off ?
Could a solenoid valve perhaps have stuck open and thus no shut down?

cheers

Hey mate - it's when the engine won't go with the key in that you really need to worry! :D

Don't suppose you have a secret turbo timer set to half and hour, do you?

Had this on my TD5 Defender - leaving the dealer.

Transpired a gearbox earth wasn't reattached properly. Causes all sorts of weird anomalies depending on make & model.

I had dim parking lights, no reversing light as I recall.

Its a weird feeling when it won't turn off on the key!

No good news at all on this Keith as Rex from the stealers has confirmed that service is only available in Broome still.
The sales staff know it loses them sales and therefore money but there's nothing they can do to rectify the situation so we'll all have to wait for LRA to get things moving.
Another reason for me to wait until next year sometime before even considering a Puma.:(
Hope you've had some success anyway.
Cheers.
Alan.

I wonder where Keith has gone? No word since first posting of his problem.
Maybe he's at work and not able to respond to those that have attempted to assist.;)

Thanks to all those who posted suggestions and pursued possible LR service options on my behalf. A local service workshop manager suggested I try Barth Bros (engine recond specialists) in Karratha as they had a (generic) fault code reader and any fault code might shed some light on the problem.

When I opened the fuse panel to access the diagnostic port - which on the Puma is directly below the steering column - we were amazed when a heap of fine drilling alloy swarf fell out! This was from when the steering lock had to be drilled out to replace the jammed ignition lock 6 weeks ago!

The fuse compartment is open at the 'top' and the hinge-down door acted as a floor, holding in the swarf. Swarf had made its way into the diagnostic port itself and about a teaspoonful was removed. Likely to have been bridging contacts?? Fault code read came up with "ECU ground earth fault", so if this was the problem the ECU apparently thought the engine was still 'meant' to be running.

A good vacuum out and went back out bush prospecting and no further recurrence, so fingers crossed that all is well.
Cheers

I have always believed that the last thing to be repaired is the first thing to look at if things go awry. Glad to hear that all worked out for you Keith.
